The gold medal in martial arts won on August 20th marked the second time Phuong Giang stood on the highest podium at the regional sports games. In her joy at bringing glory to her country, she dedicated a special tribute to her father, who passed away a year earlier.
The female martial artist from Hanoi believes the SEA Games gold medal is a fitting belated gift for her father. "My father passed away just a year ago," Phuong Giang shared tearfully with VnExpress. "Before he died, I was preparing to participate in a tournament and hoped to achieve something to show him, but I didn't have time. With this gold medal, I think I can bring it home for him."
"Thank you, Dad," Huong Giang said, wiping away tears.
Huong Giang said that her father was her inspiration and motivation to pursue a career in wushu. Previously, fearing her daughter would suffer hardship, her mother strongly opposed it, but her father supported her and often drove her to training 12 km from home, regardless of the weather.
In the martial arts competition on the morning of August 20th, Phuong Giang scored 9.64 points, just 0.01 points higher than her home opponent Ying Ting Loh.At the 27th SEA Games in Myanmar, Phuong Giang won the Long Fist event.
Speaking after winning the second gold medal for the Vietnamese delegation, Phuong Giang still expressed "dissatisfaction" with winning by only 0.01 points."Winning by a narrow margin would bring more joy, but I'd prefer a safe victory with a larger margin," Phuong Giang said.
At the age of 25, the SEA Games 29 gold medal was also a gift for Phuong Giang personally, as many of her contemporaries had already transitioned into coaching. "Wushu has given me so much," she shared.
For Phuong Giang, wushu is not simply a martial art, but an art form. That is also her message to those who want to learn and practice wushu.
