King Bhumibol Adulyadej, 88, has not been seen in public for a year due to poor health, AFP reported today. In recent months, the Thai royal family has regularly updated the king's health status, saying he is suffering from serious problems, including kidney failure.
Over the past two years, the king has been treated for a variety of ailments including bacterial infections, breathing difficulties, heart disease and hydrocephalus. Doctors placed him on a ventilator after his blood pressure dropped following a procedure to drain fluid from his spine.
"The medical team is monitoring the symptoms and carefully considering treatment options as the King's health condition is unstable," the Thai royal palace said in a statement.
King Bhumibol Adulyadej has reigned for seven tumultuous decades, and his health is a common concern for many Thais. He is also protected by the world's strictest laws against defaming the monarchy.
