Sentenced to death, former teacher from Nghe An hopes to donate organs

Hanoi People's Court has just brought defendant Ho Xuan Long (born 1958, Nghe An) to trial for the crime of Illegally transporting drugs.

Previously, at 2:45 a.m. on September 23, 2019, Hanoi police on duty at Nuoc Ngam bus station discovered Long getting off the bus, carrying a brown briefcase with suspicious signs.

The task force inspected and seized drugs weighing more than 1,762 grams in the briefcase that Long was carrying. According to Long's statement to the police, around mid-May 2019, he went to make ice in Quy Hop district, Nghe An, and met a young man about 25 years old, name and address unknown.

This person proposed to hire the defendant to transport heroin from Nghe An to Hanoi. Long agreed and promised to call him when needed. In mid-August 2019, the young man called and hired Long to transport 2 heroin cakes from Yen Ly intersection, Nghe An to Hanoi, someone would receive them and pay him 15 million VND/cake.

After receiving the “goods”, Long took a bus from Nghe An to Hanoi to deliver the drugs to a man around 40 years old, whose name and address were unknown, and received a payment of 30 million VND. On September 20, 2019, the young man called Long again to hire him to transport 5 heroin cakes from Nghe An to Nuoc Ngam bus station.

Two days later, at 7:45 p.m., Long went to the meeting point at Yen Ly intersection, met a young man to receive the "goods", put it in a black briefcase and took a bus to Hanoi.

Even though he was disguised as a police officer with a briefcase in his hand, Long still could not fool the detectives. Before he could deliver the “goods” and receive his payment, the police arrived and arrested him along with the evidence. The accusation was that there was only enough evidence to charge Long with illegally transporting 5 heroin cakes on September 23, 2019.

It is known that defendant Long used to be a teacher, then transferred to work at the Department of Education and Training of Con Cuong district.

For stealing socialist property, Long was sentenced to life in prison in 1997. His sentence was reduced, he was released in January 2012 and fell back into crime.

For the crime as stated, Long was sentenced to death by the jury. Upon receiving the death sentence, the defendant said he wanted to donate his organs.
