(Baonghean) - Thanh Dong is one of the 7 key communes of Thanh Chuong district in building new rural areas. Through review, since the end of 2010, Thanh Dong has only achieved 6/19 new rural criteria, with a huge amount of work and capital needs, and the implementation time is only 5 years.

To gradually complete 19/19 criteria to be recognized as the NTM finish line by the end of November 2015, the commune has made detailed plans for each step, discussed publicly and democratically, and focused on directing and mobilizing farmers to convert their land for the second time with good results. The transportation system, internal irrigation, and land are concentrated in each household producing 1-2 areas, convenient for mechanization to free up labor and improve fields for intensive investment in production development. People have contributed over 67,130m2 of land for transportation, internal irrigation, and public works.

The commune also strengthens agricultural extension work, accelerates the application of scientific and technical advances in agricultural and forestry production. Developing safe vegetable, bean, and squash production areas concentrated in the fields and low-lying areas. Stabilizing the wet rice area at 262.2 ha/year, focusing on hybrid rice area of ​​over 70% and high-quality varieties to ensure local food security, increasing value per unit area. Maintaining the annual corn area at 140 ha, with an average yield of 5.5 quintals/ha; output reaching about 770 tons. Introducing new peanut varieties with high yield and good quality. Planning the development of livestock and aquaculture areas such as Ao Sen, Nay Can, Loi Tren, Loi Dua, Rat Sau, and Dam Cho Kem. Investing in developing models of fattening cattle and breeding goats, developing combined fish-rice models in 7 villages. Maintain and develop industries such as: Non-fired brick production, carpentry, mechanical welding, repair, transportation, construction... 6 enterprises located in the area create jobs for hundreds of local workers with stable income from 3,500,000 - 4,000,000 VND; the average income per capita of the commune in 2013 was 23.3 million VND; in 2014 it was 25.7 million VND; in 2015 it was estimated at 27 million VND. Up to now, the poverty rate has decreased to 4.9%.

In the field of education, the school infrastructure system has been focused on investment and construction, the quality of teaching and learning has been improved, the kindergarten and primary school have met level I standards, all 3 schools have ensured the area of ​​the campus, playground, practice ground, parking lot... The working headquarters of the Party Committee - People's Council - People's Committee of the commune is built with 2 spacious floors; the cultural hall ensures community activities and meetings. The communal stadium has a solid campus, with enough space for football, volleyball and other sports competitions. 10/10 villages have cultural houses and sports grounds with standard campus area, the cultural house has enough tables and chairs for community activities, and has enough sound and light. The communal martyrs' cemetery has been renovated, upgraded, and new items such as gates, fences, memorial houses, and graves have been built... Dung Market has been planned, legal procedures have been completed and construction has begun to upgrade the front rows of booths and surrounding fences. The cultural post office is located in the center of the commune, ensuring good postal and telecommunication services for the people. The commune People's Committee Center, the health station, and 3 schools are connected to the internet to serve the work of accessing knowledge and market information.

In the health sector, by December 2015 the commune had reached national health standards level II. Environmental sanitation work was focused on and strictly implemented, all hamlets far from the center had family garbage pits for self-treatment in accordance with environmental protection regulations. Large farms were separated from residential areas. There were no activities that degraded the environment and there were activities to develop a green, clean and beautiful environment. 100% of production and business establishments met environmental standards, built a garbage collection point; periodically mobilized people to clean up village roads and alleys every month and collect garbage according to regulations with a garbage transport team to the landfill; assigned the Commune Farmers' Association to coordinate with the garbage collection teams of the villages and monitor the management of the landfill.

After 5 years of building the new rural area, Thanh Dong commune has mobilized construction resources with a total cost of 121.995 billion VND. Of which, the provincial and central budgets: 60.911 billion VND; district budget: 0.780 billion VND; commune budget: 8.364 billion VND; enterprises: 4.7 billion VND; people's contributions: 46.102 billion VND, socialized sources: 1.2 billion VND. Invested in upgrading 15.65 km of commune and inter-commune roads to 100% asphalt and concrete; 30.15 km of village roads and alley roads have been hardened according to standards. 16.04 km of the main road in the fields has been 100% hardened to ensure convenient motor vehicle travel. Renovating and upgrading the pumping station to ensure irrigation and domestic needs, the 8.5 km hardened irrigation canal system basically meets the irrigation needs for agricultural production for the people. The commune has 4 transformer stations with a total capacity of 990 KVA with a 20 km low voltage line to ensure 100% of households have regular electricity.
