Latest Celtic vs Newcastle squad information

Celtic have sold Nicolas Kuhn to Como for £16.5m, while Jota is out until 2025 with an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Against that backdrop, James Forrest – a club legend and currently the only first-team right-back – is almost certain to feature on Saturday.

Centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers has returned to full training after minor knee surgery earlier in the summer and could feature alongside key players such as Kasper Schmeichel, Callum McGregor and Daizen Maeda.

New signings Benjamin Nygren, Kieran Tierney, Ross Doohan, Hayato Inamura and Callum Osmand have all signed permanent contracts and are likely to be given a chance to play in the upcoming match.

As for Newcastle, coach Howe used two different formations in the two halves against Carlisle – a plan that can continue to be applied to help the whole team improve their fitness and get used to the feeling of the match.

Anthony Elanga – a £55m signing from Nottingham Forest – could make his Magpies debut, while his Swedish team-mate Alexander Isak has also trained, despite interest from Liverpool.

Key players Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon, Dan Burn and Tino Livramento are not involved against Carlisle, but are all likely to return against Celtic. Lewis Hall, however, is likely to remain absent due to a foot injury.

Latest Celtic vs Newcastle football review

After winning a record-equalling 55th Scottish Premiership title, a record-equalling 22nd League Cup and losing the Scottish Cup final to Aberdeen in the final game of the 2024–25 season, Celtic had less than six weeks of summer break before returning to training on 4 July.

Celtic started pre-season with back-to-back wins: 1-0 at Queen's Park and 2-1 at Cork City (Ireland). However, they lost 3-2 to Estrela Amadora in their first friendly in Portugal - where the team is currently on a warm-weather training camp.

However, Brendan Rodgers' side quickly returned to winning ways with a 2-0 win over Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday, thanks to second-half goals from Reo Hatate and Luke McCowan.

Rodgers praised his team’s “excellent” tactical and team performance in the Algarve. Despite Celtic scoring twice in each of their last three friendlies, he said his side “lacked a little bit of cutting edge in the final third” against Sporting and could have scored more.

After a successful training camp in the Iberian Peninsula, Celtic will return to Glasgow to host Newcastle at the weekend, before travelling to Como to face Ajax in their final friendly on 24 July – 10 days before they begin their defence of the Scottish Premiership title against St Mirren.

Newcastle United, managed by Eddie Howe, ended a 70-year domestic trophy drought by winning the EFL Cup in March, before finishing fifth in the Premier League – qualifying for the Champions League for the second time in three seasons.

The Tyneside outfit began their pre-season preparations with a comfortable 4-0 win over non-league Carlisle United in a behind-closed-doors game at their training ground last weekend.

Fans were delighted to see Joelinton – who missed the final five games of last season through injury – return with a goal, while Jacob Murphy, Ben Parkinson and Sean Longstaff (who is set to join Leeds United) also found the net.

After a short training camp in Austria, Newcastle will play their first friendly at Celtic Park since the summer of 2004 – when legendary manager Bobby Robson's side lost 2-1 to Celtic.

Around 10,000 Newcastle fans are expected to travel to Glasgow with their team – the first since the 2023 game against Rangers at Ibrox (a 2-1 win, a testimonial for goalkeeper Allan McGregor).

Howe will be hoping to learn from the Celtic clash before his side head to Singapore and South Korea for their summer tour. Newcastle will face Arsenal at the Singapore Festival of Football, before taking on K League All-Stars and Tottenham in the Coupang Play Series.
