Latest Liverpool vs PSG squad information

Liverpool head into the game against PSG with no fresh injury concerns following their win over Southampton, but Cody Gakpo is yet to return from his recent injury and his availability remains a doubt.

The three names that are definitely absent from the home team are Tyler Morton (shoulder), Joe Gomez (hamstring) and Conor Bradley (hamstring). In the match last weekend, coach Arne Slot made up to three changes right at half-time, including taking Dominik Szoboszlai off the field.

After the game, Slot admitted that he may have made a mistake in starting the Hungarian midfielder, as he was showing signs of physical overload. This could give Harvey Elliott, Liverpool's hero from the first leg in Paris, a chance to start in the No. 10 role in midweek.

PSG, on the other hand, travelled to Anfield with a fully fit squad, allowing manager Luis Enrique to make the necessary rotations in the win over Rennes. Several key players were rested over the weekend in preparation for this match.

Ousmane Dembélé is expected to return to the starting line-up, replacing Gonçalo Ramos in attack. In addition, stars such as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Vitinha, Fabian Ruiz, Achraf Hakimi, Marquinhos, Nuno Mendes and Gianluigi Donnarumma will also return to the starting line-up after being rested in the previous match.

Young talent Warren Zaïre-Emery, who captained PSG in the win over Rennes when deployed at right-back, is likely to be benched for the trip to Anfield.

Latest Liverpool vs PSG football commentary

Despite trying hard for 90 minutes, Paris Saint-Germain were unable to find the back of Alisson Becker's net, except for a Khvicha Kvaratskhelia goal that was ruled out for offside. The Brazilian goalkeeper produced a superb performance with nine saves at the Parc des Princes, leaving PSG empty-handed.

Under Luis Enrique's direction, PSG fired 27 shots but could not find a way to the Liverpool goal. Meanwhile, the visitors had only two shots in the whole match, but still came away with a victory thanks to Harvey Elliott's decisive goal in the 87th minute, after he came off the bench.

According to Champions League statistics, only one team has ever won a knockout round despite conceding more than 25 shots. In addition, winning the first leg always bodes well for Liverpool, as they have won all 14 of their last Champions League ties after winning their opening game. The last time the Reds were eliminated despite winning the first leg was against Bayer Leverkusen in the 2001-02 season.

However, what PSG failed to do last week, Southampton did on Saturday, with Will Smallbone capitalising on a rare error from Liverpool's defence to give the Premier League's bottom side the lead.

Liverpool showed class in the second half, though, with Darwin Nunez equalising before Mohamed Salah scored twice from the penalty spot. With those two goals, the Egyptian striker became Liverpool's third-highest scorer and equalled the record for most goals in a 38-game Premier League season.

Liverpool's 3-1 comeback win over Southampton extended their run of four straight wins in all competitions, but like the game at the Parc des Princes, there were signs in the first half that PSG could exploit to give them hope in the return leg.

While the first-leg defeat was a shock given the number of chances they created, it was a familiar story for PSG in the Champions League – the only trophy that has eluded them despite their huge investment.

PSG, however, can take inspiration from their own performance last season. In the quarter-finals of the 2023-24 Champions League, they lost 2-3 at home to Barcelona but then staged a dramatic comeback with a 4-1 win at Camp Nou to qualify.

Coincidentally, PSG had just had a 4-1 win over Rennes on Saturday, with Bradley Barcola and Gonçalo Ramos on target, before Ousmane Dembélé completed his double in stoppage time, taking his Ligue 1 tally this season to 20.

The win over Rennes extended PSG's away winning streak to 13 in all competitions, including their last three in the Champions League. However, the opponents they beat – Brest, Stuttgart and Red Bull Salzburg – are not at the same level as Liverpool.

The facts are not in PSG’s favour either, with none of their last 15 away games against English sides in European competition having won. But PSG were the last team to break that record when they beat Manchester United at Old Trafford in December 2020, giving them some hope ahead of their trip to Merseyside – unless Alisson Becker continues his masterful display to thwart the French side’s attempts.
