Latest Newcastle vs Wolverhampton football review

If the off-field drama involving Alexander Isak wasn't troubling enough, Newcastle's start to the season has been disappointing, with them without a win in three games.

The Magpies became only the fifth team in Premier League history to start a season with back-to-back 0-0 draws away from home, against Aston Villa and Leeds United respectively, followed by a painful late defeat to Liverpool – the most notable result in the first three rounds.

This is only the second time in Newcastle's history that they have started two away games goalless – the last time was back in 1901. Remarkably, they have drawn 0-0 more times this season (twice) than they did in the previous two combined (once).

The result extended Newcastle's run of five Premier League games without a win, putting them on course for their longest such run in three years. They last lost three consecutive games at St James' Park in February 2021, and that could be the case if Newcastle fall again this time around.

There are some bright spots, though, particularly in defence, where Newcastle have allowed the fewest shots in the league so far (18). However, the big problem is a lack of cutting edge in attack, and the introduction of new signings Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa could make a difference.

Wolves could be the ideal opponents, as Newcastle have lost just two of their 20 Premier League meetings with Wolves, and have scored in every one of those encounters. Furthermore, Wolves have won just one of their last 22 away trips to Tyneside, keeping just two clean sheets in 43, the last of which came in 1974.

Meanwhile, Wolves' current form does not offer much hope of turning history around. They are the only team in the Premier League without a point, currently at the bottom of the table.

Coach Vitor Pereira will be very concerned about the risk of writing a sad page in history, when the "Wolves" could lose all four opening matches of the season for the first time in their 127-year history of professional competition.

The main reason is weak defense, when Wolves have conceded the most goals in the tournament with 8, after defeats to Man City, Bournemouth and Everton.

After a run of form in March and April that lifted them out of the relegation zone, Wolves have returned to their previous form. Since then, they have picked up just one point from their last seven games, and a trip to Newcastle is another tough test before next week’s crucial “final” against Leeds.
