Vietnam spent nearly $1.46 billion to import more than 5.45 million tons of wheat in 2025. Although the total import value decreased by 7.8%, the supply from the US market increased by a record 96.5%.

Vietnam ended 2025 with total wheat imports exceeding 5.45 million tons, equivalent to nearly $1.46 billion. According to preliminary statistics released by the Customs Department on January 10, 2026, although import volume and value decreased by 5.1% and 7.8% respectively compared to 2024, the market recorded significant shifts in the structure of supply sources.

Imported wheat prices continue their downward trend.

For the whole year of 2025, the average price of imported wheat nationwide reached 267.4 USD/ton, a decrease of 2.8% compared to the previous year. This downward trend was clearly evident in December 2025 when the average price was only 263.6 USD/ton, a decrease of 3.6% compared to November and a decrease of 4% compared to the same period in 2024.

In the last month of the year, Vietnam imported 297,931 tons of wheat, worth $78.55 million. Compared to November 2025, these figures all recorded a sharp decrease, specifically a 30.6% decrease in volume and a 33.1% decrease in value.

Shifting focus in key supply markets

Australia continues to maintain its position as Vietnam's largest wheat supplier in 2025. Imports from this country reached 1.39 million tons, equivalent to US$380.37 million, accounting for 25.4% of the total volume and 26.1% of the total value nationwide. Notably, although imports from Australia increased by 15.8%, due to a 9.3% decrease in average price (down to US$274.1/ton), import value only increased by 5%.

Brazil ranked second with 1.04 million tons, valued at $267.73 million. This market accounted for 19.1% of total imports but recorded a decrease of 11.4% in volume and 8.7% in value compared to 2024. Contrary to the general trend, the average import price of wheat from Brazil increased by 3.1%.

A strong breakthrough from the US market.

The most significant highlight in the 2025 import report is the dramatic growth of the US market. With 952,554 tons of wheat, equivalent to $258.57 million, imports from the US increased sharply by 96.5% in volume and 72.6% in value compared to 2024. Currently, the US accounts for approximately 17.5% of Vietnam's total wheat import volume and 17.7% of its total import value.
