Japan's Ministry of Defense has begun operating its first long-range missile system in Kumamoto Prefecture, aiming to enhance its deterrence and counter-attack capabilities amid a complex regional security situation.

Japan has officially deployed the upgraded Type-12 land-to-ship missile system at Kengun base in Kumamoto Prefecture. This is a significant step in the Japan Self-Defense Forces' plan to enhance its long-range defense capabilities in response to growing security challenges in the southwestern region.

Significant upgrades in range and combat capabilities.

The upgraded Type-12 missile system, developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, boasts a range of up to 1,000 km, a five-fold increase over its predecessor (approximately 200 km). This expanded operational range allows Japan to possess long-range strike capabilities, enabling it to target strategic enemy objectives from a safe distance.

Speaking at the deployment ceremony, Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi emphasized that the current security environment is at its most critical stage since World War II. He affirmed that the commissioning of the new weapon is a testament to the government's determination to strengthen its self-defense capabilities and create a real deterrent against geopolitical shifts.

Strategy for expanding the long-range weapons arsenal.

The deployment in Kumamoto Prefecture is just one part of Japan's military modernization roadmap. According to the plan, the Ministry of Defense will continue to expand the deployment of modern weapons nationwide.

  • Hypersonic glide weapons:Deployment has begun at Fuji Base, Shizuoka Prefecture.
  • Tomahawk missile:It is expected to be integrated onto the destroyer JS Chokai by the end of this year, and then expanded to seven more destroyers with a range of 1,600 km.
  • Expanding the geographical area:Continue deploying upgraded Type-12 missiles to Hokkaido and Miyazaki prefectures around March 2028.

Changes in defense doctrine

This move marks a significant shift from the purely defensive defense policy that Japan has maintained for decades. Counter-strike capability through cruise missiles and hypersonic weapons is considered key to protecting territorial sovereignty, especially in the southwestern islands.

In addition to arms investments, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's cabinet approved a record defense budget exceeding 9 trillion yen for the new fiscal year. This budget focuses on the development of cruise missiles, coastal defense, and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems.

Community reaction and regional context

However, the deployment of long-range weapons near populated areas has met with opposition from some residents in Kumamoto Prefecture. Protesters expressed concerns about the risk of escalating tensions and the potential for the area to become a military target if conflict were to occur.

From a regional perspective, Tokyo is paying particular attention to monitoring China's military activities. Last June, the simultaneous operation of two Chinese aircraft carriers near Minamitorishima Island caused significant concern. To enhance surveillance, the Japanese Ministry of Defense has also established a dedicated office to study and monitor all activities of the Chinese military in the Pacific.
