The rate of achieving good vision after cataract surgery in Vietnam is only 60%, much lower than the world recommendation of 80%.

This information is from the June 27th announcement by the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management of the Ministry of Health, regarding the standards for diagnosing and treating cataracts.

According to Mr. Luong Ngoc Khue, Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management, a rapid assessment of the causes of blindness over the years 2000, 2007, and 2015 showed that the rate of people blind in both eyes decreased from 4.1% to 1.8%.

The leading cause of blindness is cataracts (accounting for 74% of people blind in both eyes), however, blindness due to complications after cataract surgery also accounts for 4.6%.

The Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management also stated that 60% of people who underwent cataract surgery had good vision, a rate significantly lower than the World Health Organization's recommendation of 80%. The overall quality of treatment varied across regions and "did not meet expectations."

Mr. Khue also stated that there have been several complications related to cataract surgery, including four patients who filed lawsuits after going blind following the surgery in Ho Chi Minh City.

In Hanoi, there have been lawsuits over suspected poor-quality eye implants. In the recently issued 9-point criteria, patients are advised on and can choose artificial lenses, the surgical site must be clearly identified, and the facility must meet the necessary conditions...
