Need help to get back 2.7 billion that was scammed, lost nearly 1 billion more
Tran Thi Hanh pretended to be a police officer capable of solving the case and finding the perpetrator to defraud and appropriate nearly 1 billion VND.
The Criminal Police Department of Thanh Hoa Province Police said it had initiated a case, prosecuted the accused and temporarily detained Tran Thi Hanh, born in 1984 in Hoang Xuan commune, Hoang Hoa district, for fraud and property appropriation.
Previously, on November 15, the Criminal Police Department of Thanh Hoa Province Police received a criminal complaint from a resident in But Son town, Hoang Hoa district, accusing Tran Thi Hanh of impersonating a police officer capable of solving the case to defraud and appropriate nearly 1 billion VND from the victim.
Immediately after receiving the report, the Criminal Police Department quickly began investigating, verifying and clarifying the case.
Through initial verification, the Criminal Police Department determined: In 2020, while participating in a charity program in Nghi Son town, Tran Thi Hanh met the victim's husband. Because there were many police officers in the group, the victim's husband thought that Hanh was also working in the police force. In early March 2023, the victim's husband called Hanh to tell her that his wife had just been scammed on social media and lost 2.7 billion VND and asked Hanh to help track down the perpetrator to reclaim the lost money.
After the victim and her husband told her over the phone, Hanh agreed to help and said she could investigate and recover the money that had been previously defrauded from the victim. After that, Hanh instructed the victim to write a criminal complaint to the police and said that she would “work with” the authorities to quickly arrest the scammer and recover the victim’s money.
During the guidance process, Hanh repeatedly asked the victim's family to give him money to "take care of things" with a total amount of nearly 1 billion VND. Around July 2023, after sending a lot of money to Hanh but not being able to resolve the matter as promised, the victim and her husband suspected that Hanh was not a police officer, so they continuously called to demand that Hanh return the money. To reassure the victim's family, Hanh continued to provide information that he was a police officer to deceive the victim and did not return the money. In November 2023, after checking, they found out that Hanh was not a police officer, so they filed a complaint with the Criminal Police Department of Thanh Hoa Provincial Police.
