Vietnamese hacker group sentenced for stealing credit to buy luxury goods

Taking advantage of his knowledge in the field of information technology, Ba and his accomplices hacked international websites and stole credit information from many people to order perfume and luxury phones.

After 2 days of trial and deliberation, on August 23, the Hanoi People's Court issued a verdict against a group of Vietnamese youths who hacked international websites and stole credit information to make purchases.

Specifically, Nguyen Duong Son Ba (29 years old, in Ba Dinh district) received a 7-year prison sentence for using a computer network, telecommunications network, internet network or digital device to commit property appropriation and illegally accessing another person's computer network, telecommunications network, internet network or digital device.

The defendants who assisted Ba were Nguyen Van Hieu (30 years old, in Nam Dinh), Le Anh Viet (22 years old), Tran Nhat Minh (22 years old), all in Bac Giang, and Vu Duy Nam (30 years old, in Hanoi), who received suspended sentences of 18 to 36 months in prison for using computer networks, telecommunications networks, the internet, or digital devices to appropriate property, illegally access other people's computer networks, telecommunications networks, the internet, or digital devices.

According to the indictment, Nguyen Duong Son Ba is knowledgeable in the field of information technology. From 2009 to 2015, Ba participated in many forums on the Internet to learn how to attack (hack) websites to steal credit card information of foreigners (CC).

During the process of learning, Ba met Nam and asked this person to write and edit program code to hack international websites for him.

Then, Ba used the stolen CCs and supporting software to change the IP address to order perfume, expensive phones... Authorities determined that Ba ordered many types of goods with a total amount of about 170 million VND.

To carry out the act, Ba hired Viet and Minh to use CC to buy goods and ship them to an intermediary address in the US with a fee of 30-40% of the value of the goods.

In addition to the above acts, the authorities also determined that Ba helped Nguyen Van Hieu use CC to deposit more than 46 million VND into his Starbucks account, then transferred it to another person to sell for profit, earning 1.3 million VND./.
