Interesting differences between women then and now.
(Baonghean.vn) - As time flows by, standards of evaluation also gradually change. Vietnamese women today are very different from those of the past, from taking care of their appearance and health to their behavior and perceptions of their social status.

In the past, women with long black hair wrapped in a black velvet headscarf, round faces, dove-like eyes, and blackened teeth were the epitome of beauty. For many women in the past, brushing their teeth was a strange activity, partly because tartar couldn't adhere to teeth that had been blackened. Today, women also use many methods to protect their teeth, but naturally, they prefer a bright, clean smile.

Women in the past often wore their hair long, loosely tied back so it cascaded over their shoulders. To style it, they would either let it down, adding a few simple clips, or neatly bun it in a ponytail, with a few soft strands falling loosely at the nape of their neck. Nowadays, modern women use all sorts of chemical products to style their hair, straightening, curling, creating large or small curls, and dyeing it in their favorite colors, as long as it makes them feel beautiful and confident.

Traditionally, women's clothing was quite modest; they preferred long dresses, and even if they had slits, they were cleverly designed to avoid revealing too much skin. Today, women prefer fashionable outfits in a variety of styles, some even custom-designed to fit their figures.

Just like today, women in the past also desired full, voluptuous breasts. But without the supplements, stimulants, or breast augmentation procedures of modern times, they relied on natural products to enlarge their breasts.

In the past, postpartum women were not allowed to leave their rooms, had to avoid drafts throughout their confinement period, were forbidden from using fans, and had to lie under charcoal embers, even in summer. They were only allowed to eat dried braised fish, braised pork with turmeric, water spinach, and drink hot water; they were absolutely forbidden from eating fruit… Nowadays, these excessive restrictions after childbirth are no longer as strict. Most modern postpartum women have abandoned lying under charcoal embers, are more comfortable with fans and air conditioners, bathe early, and eat a nutritious diet.

In the past, women played the role of "domestic commander" and were somewhat subordinate to men. The concept of "three obediences and four virtues" was a common way to judge a woman's character. Today, understanding and equality have somewhat liberated women from injustice and oppression, as well as creating conditions for them to expand their knowledge and participate actively in social and political activities.

There's an old saying, "A man with a wide mouth is prosperous, a woman with a wide mouth brings ruin to the whole family." This can be considered a concept of female beauty; a small, delicate mouth has always been seen as the pure charm of an East Asian woman. Today, most women are captivated by a "radiant smile," and a wide mouth is considered the standard of beauty, creating an attractive and likeable appearance that inspires others.

In the past, women had to "deal with" the whole family's laundry by bending over, scrubbing, and wringing clothes directly by hand, then drying them. Laundry took hours. Today, the support of modern technology has freed women from the burden of housework, especially laundry, which has become effortless with increasingly modern and intelligent washing machines.

In the old days, brides and grooms only had a few black and white photos together. By the late 19th century, color photos were common, taken right at their wedding as a keepsake. Now, with better conditions, before their wedding, every couple prepares several sets of stunning photos, edited with elaborate effects, bound into albums or large frames. Some even print the photos, frame them in small wooden frames, and use them to decorate the reception hall on their big day.

In the past, very few women had the opportunity to go to school and become literate. Today, women receive a full education, and a university degree is sometimes considered merely a sign of literacy. Many women carry with them degrees from two or three universities, several languages, and numerous other courses.

With the traditional patriarchal mindset, women in the past had little say in the family. They were relegated to the lower table and had no say in important matters. Today, women not only decide what to eat tonight, but can also decide when to buy a car, when to build a house, where to invest money, how many zeros are in their husband's monthly allowance, which school their children attend, and what majors they should pursue...

Women in the past didn't have many forms of entertainment. Nowadays, women can enjoy anything that offers entertainment. Even pastimes seemingly reserved for men, like billiards, football, and table tennis...
