Which birth years require updating their national identity cards in 2026?

PL. November 19, 2025 16:52

I was born in 2001. Earlier this year, I lost my ID card and had it reissued, but I heard that you have to change your ID card at age 25. I would like to know which birth years require ID card changes in 2026, and whether I have to change mine. (This is a question from Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tung, Chau Khe commune, Nghe An province).

Reply:Based on Article 21 of the 2023 Identity Card Law, the age requirements for issuing or renewing identity cards are as follows:

Article 21. Age for issuing/renewing identity cards

1. Vietnamese citizens who have been issued an identity card must go through the procedure to renew their identity card when they reach the ages of 14, 25, 40, and 60.

2. Identity cards that have been issued, replaced, or reissued within two years prior to the age for identity card replacement as stipulated in Clause 1 of this Article shall remain valid until the next age for identity card replacement.

Accordingly, citizens will have to go through the procedure of renewing their identity cards when they reach the ages of 14, 25, 40, and 60.

Therefore, the birth years mustChange your identity card in 2026.including:

- Citizens born in 2012:Must be 14 years old.

- Citizens born in 2001:Must be 25 years old.

- Citizens born in 1986:At least 40 years old.

- Citizens born in 1966:At least 60 years old.

*Note:If an identity card has been issued, renewed, or reissued within two years prior to the age for renewal, it remains valid until the next age for renewal.

Therefore, Mr. Tung, born in 2001, should have had his identity card renewed in 2026. However, since he renewed his card in 2025, he will only need to renew it when he turns 40, according to regulations.
