This year's enrollment season has been marked by the achievements of Ly Nhat Quang Secondary School in Do Luong commune (Nghe An province), with two students achieving top scores.

Among them, Vo Nhat Quang (class 9D) is a co-valedictorian of the provincial entrance exam for 10th grade with 29.25 points; Dao Mai Han (class 9A) is the valedictorian of the Geography specialization at Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted.

Vo Nhat Hoang- Top student in 10th grade with outstanding achievements in Mathematics

Despite scoring 29.25 points in the 10th grade entrance exam and becoming one of the four top scorers this year, Vo Nhat Hoang still feels a little regretful that he didn't get a perfect 10 in Math – his strongest subject: "I finished the exam in about an hour and spent the remaining 60 minutes checking and reviewing my results. Therefore, losing points is very regrettable," Hoang said.

As Hoang's math teacher at Ly Nhat Quang Secondary School, Mr. Phan Ba Thao also said that Hoang is an intelligent, calm student with neat and careful presentation. Therefore, both teacher and student had high expectations for this year's exam. The good news is that, in addition to achieving the top score, Hoang also made it into the top 4 in the specialized math class at Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted with 17.75 points.

Before entering this important exam, Nhat Hoang had already demonstrated his abilities with many outstanding achievements, such as having been the co-valedictorian of the Do Luong district's excellent student competition when he was in 8th grade and winning second prize in the provincial excellent student competition in Mathematics in 9th grade.

Sharing his study secrets, Nhat Hoang said that he doesn't learn by rote memorization or following a rigid format for assignments. Instead, he regularly organizes his knowledge, categorizes different types of problems, and creates his own "topical notebook." Under the guidance of his teacher, Phan Ba Thao, he was directed on how to approach each area of knowledge, such as geometry, arithmetic, and algebra, thereby developing clear thinking and the ability to flexibly handle difficult problems.

Teacher Thao also recounted that, although he only officially taught Hoang from the 8th grade, he was very impressed with him from the very first lessons because Hoang was a very diligent and serious student in every lesson. Despite being a student with outstanding abilities, whether the problem was easy or difficult, he always solved it carefully and meticulously.

One of the learning principles that Nhật Hoàng has always upheld is the importance of mastering fundamental knowledge. He believes that every difficult problem begins with basic concepts in textbooks. Once the essence is understood, expanding and deepening the understanding becomes more natural, rather than rote memorization or reliance on sample solutions. Therefore, he always prioritizes deep understanding over quick learning.

Besides focusing on Math, Nhat Hoang also developed a balanced learning approach for other subjects. For Literature, he emphasized listening carefully to lectures in class, then independently organizing the ideas and referring to good essays to expand his vocabulary. For English, he combined studying within the curriculum with aiming for an IELTS score of 6.0–6.5 to support his long-term studies in high school and beyond to university.

Nhat Hoang maintains a disciplined lifestyle and study habits. He rarely stays up too late, prioritizing mental health and alertness during his studies. Although his parents are teachers, Hoang says he doesn't face excessive academic pressure from his family. However, he always sets goals for himself and strives to live up to the expectations of his parents and teachers.

Speaking about his son, Mr. Vo Cong Dong – Hoang's father – recounted that when Hoang was young, because his father taught in the mountainous district of Tuong Duong, Hoang's studies at home were mainly supervised by his mother. Hoang himself studied well in all subjects, but since entering junior high school, he has shown a clear aptitude for mathematics, and his family has always supported him.

"

My house is 15 km from the school. Since my child and other children from the village started studying at Ly Nhat Quang Secondary School, families in the village have been taking turns transporting the children to school, which is quite a struggle. Despite this, we have great confidence in the teachers at the school and believe that our children will be able to develop their abilities here.

Having been accepted into the specialized Math class at Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted, Hoang shared that alongside the joy, there was also a lot of pressure. However, Hoang also set very high goals for himself and hopes that the initial foundations he has achieved will serve as a basis for him to develop and continue to make his mark in future high school exams.

Dao Mai Han- The top student in Geography likes to challenge himself with difficult exam questions.

At the end of the 10th grade entrance exam, Dao Mai Han also made a special impression by achieving 28 points in 3 subjects, including a perfect 10 in English. Meanwhile, in the entrance exam for the specialized Geography class at Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted, she also achieved the highest score in the specialized subject and became the valedictorian with 16.75 points, significantly ahead of the second-place candidate.

Sharing her thoughts on the achievement, Mai Hân said she wasn't too surprised by the good news, as it was the result of a persistent and well-directed learning process. Hân also mentioned that her family has a tradition in Geography, with her cousin having won first prize in the national excellent student competition last school year, so she inherited her love for Geography from her family.

My enthusiasm for geography was further amplified during my four years at Ly Nhat Quang Junior High School, thanks to the guidance of Mr. Duong Van Thang, a teacher with over 26 years of experience teaching geography and who consistently inspires his students.

Teacher Thang recounted that Geography is a subject that is selective in terms of students, so when selecting the team, his first criterion was that students must excel in natural sciences and have a passion for it. He found both of these qualities in Mai Han, a student with strong analytical skills, high self-learning ability, and a proactive approach to knowledge: "I think what's valuable about her is not only her academic ability but also her positive attitude towards learning, always finding joy in coming to class and engaging with the subject. Personally, during my teaching process, I also structure my lessons to spark interest and inspire students, rather than imposing rules or rote memorization," Teacher Thang recalled.

To help students grasp the essence of the subject, Mr. Thang always guides them to understand the core of the problem, treating Geography as a logical science. This helps them develop analytical thinking and the ability to apply knowledge to practice. This is also why, for many years, the Geography team of Ly Nhat Quang Secondary School, led by Mr. Thang, has had many students win high awards. Mai Han, in particular, won second prize in the provincial excellent student competition last year.

Speaking further about this year's exam, both Mai Hân and her teacher Thắng shared that the entrance exam for the specialized Geography class this year was very difficult, close to the national-level gifted student exams for 12th graders. Therefore, when they learned that Mai Hân achieved the top score in this year's exam, their joy was multiplied many times over.

"

When I first received the exam paper, I was quite worried because of its high difficulty level. Many questions went beyond the scope of the textbook, requiring the ability to apply practical knowledge and synthesize information. Some content was close to the level of gifted student competitions, surprising many candidates. However, after reading the questions, I only allowed myself to be distracted for a very short time before calming down, believing that "difficulty is difficult for everyone." Afterward, I analyzed each question, breaking down the issues and doing my best. My only regret is the question about the graph; if I had more time, I could have analyzed it more deeply.

To excel in Geography, Mai Hân shared that she doesn't follow the traditional rote learning method. Instead of mechanically memorizing each piece of information, she chooses to understand the essence of the subject matter and analyze the relationships between geographical phenomena and events. Thanks to studying Geography, Mai Hân also developed a habit of reading books and newspapers, watching television, and independently synthesizing new knowledge so she can relate it to real-world situations when doing assignments.

Choosing to study Geography, Mai Hân expressed her dream of becoming a Geography teacher in the future, continuing the family tradition. She also thanked her teachers, the school, and her family for always supporting and encouraging her, giving her the confidence to progress and achieve her desired results.
