| Nishikori has beaten Djokovic twice in their seven previous encounters. |
In the press conference following his fourth-round victory in Melbourne, Kei Nishikori appeared very confident despite his next opponent being Novak Djokovic.
"I'm ready to beat him again," the seventh seed declared. Nishikori previously defeated the Serbian player in the semi-finals of the 2014 US Open. Since then, he hasn't been able to repeat that feat despite facing his opponent four times.
"I'm very confident going into the match against Novak. In London, he destroyed me, but hopefully this time it will be different. I will try to play better," said the seventh seed. "The difficulty is that he rarely makes mistakes, giving you easy points to win. Therefore, I have to play offensively and control the match."
In the fourth round, Nishikori easily defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in three sets with scores of 6-2, 6-2, 6-4. Meanwhile, Djokovic had to exert a great deal of effort, needing five sets to beat Gilles Simon. The match lasted four and a half hours.
The Djokovic-Nishikori quarterfinal match will take place on January 26th. The two players have met seven times before, with Djokovic winning five times.
