The attempted military coup in Ankara resulted in the deaths of 17 police officers.
The "purge" carried out by Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan among the top military could provoke a military coup in the country, where resolute actions by rebels always end in trials for treason, according to Igor Korotchenko, editor-in-chief of the "Defense" magazine.
"There are countless reasons for the military's dissatisfaction with the President's actions. Specifically, in the process of 'purging' figures from the previous leadership of the armed forces, Erdogan acted quite harshly – arresting, bringing to court-martial, and sentencing a series of high-ranking Turkish generals. Such actions, indeed, cannot rekindle the military's affection for the President," Korochenko told Sputnik.
