One of the two winners of the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize was a victim of rape by militants of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS).

The 2018 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict.

Nadia Murad is one of an estimated 3,000 Yazidi girls and women raped or sexually abused by Islamic State (IS) militants, a systematic abuse in a strategy of military repression that has been used as a weapon against the Yazidis and other minorities.

But Nadia showed rare courage in standing up to testify, facing her horrific past to recount the full extent of the crimes and brutal abuses that IS had committed against her and other women and girls.

Dr. Denis Mukwege has devoted much of his life to helping victims of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He and his colleagues have treated thousands of patients who have been victims of sexual assault.

Dr. Mukwege has repeatedly condemned impunity for gang rape perpetrators and criticized the Congolese government and several other countries for not doing enough to prevent the use of sexual violence against women or as a weapon of war.

Dr. Denis Mukwege and Ms. Nadia Murad beat out many other “heavyweight” candidates, including US President Donald Trump, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who are all working to promote peace on the Korean Peninsula./.
