As one of the households growing a lot of glutinous corn in the village, Mr. Thai Ba Hung shared: Previously, in the winter crop, his family's entire rice field was left fallow. But now, when the locality has a policy of growing corn on rice land, after harvesting the summer-autumn rice, his family immediately starts preparing the land to plant corn. This year, his family planted 3 sao of glutinous corn, thanks to early planting, after 70 days of care, the corn is ready to harvest.

According to Mr. Hung, the reason his family planted sticky corn is because this is a high-yielding plant. After harvesting the cotton for sale, the family can also use the stems and leaves as animal feed. Sticky corn grown in this area is both sticky and has a sweet aroma, so it is favored by markets inside and outside the district. Currently, the family imports from traders from 1,500 - 1,800 VND/ear. After deducting expenses, Mr. Hung's family earns from 4-5 million VND/sao.

These days, Ms. Nguyen Thi Ly's family in village 7, Tuong Son commune is also busy harvesting cucumbers grown on the rice fields. Ms. Ly shared: In previous years, when producing winter cucumbers, the family started planting in November; when it came to the harvest season, because all the people in the area planted at the same time, it was also difficult to sell. This year, the family sowed earlier, now they have harvested and sold at a higher price. Currently, with an area of more than 1.2 sao of cucumbers, her family picks 5-6 yen each day. With a price of 15-20 thousand VND/kg, by the end of the cucumber season, after deducting expenses, her family will make a profit of 6 million VND/sao.

Mr. Nguyen Tai Quy - Chairman of Tuong Son Commune People's Committee said: This year, the whole Tuong Son commune produced 147 hectares of third-crop corn on two-rice land and 40 hectares of vegetables, concentrated in hamlets 4, 6, 7, and 12. Regarding corn, along with sowing corn for seeds and plants as food for buffaloes and cows, this year people also sowed sticky corn to sell flowers.

In order to produce the third corn crop on the two-rice land to meet the set target, as soon as the summer-autumn rice ripened, the People's Committee of Tuong Son commune held a meeting with the villages to deploy the winter crop production plan. The People's Committee requested the commune officials in charge of the villages to regularly follow the area in charge, grasp and regularly report the situation of winter crop production to the People's Committee. Along with that, the Cooperative was assigned to coordinate with the Commune Farmers' Association to proactively contact, arrange and supply enough seeds, ensuring the season for farmers. With the above methods, winter crop production in Tuong Son commune has now become a routine, people voluntarily go to the fields to produce. These days, people are starting to harvest some crops such as sticky corn, cucumbers... early with the joy of a good harvest and good prices. With such stable prices, after deducting expenses, people earn 80 - 100 million VND/ha.

Along with Tuong Son commune, in Thach Son commune, farmers are also harvesting mustard greens. Ms. Nguyen Thi Tam in village 5, Thach Son commune shared that this winter crop, her family mainly grows mustard greens, squash shoots, green beans and cabbage. These are traditional crops of the locality. Currently, mustard greens and squash have been harvested for more than a week, on average each day her family picks 50 bunches of mustard greens and 20 bunches of squash, with prices ranging from 3,000 - 5,000 VND/bunch, providing a stable income of 200,000 to 250,000 VND. After deducting expenses, on average 1 sao of early winter vegetables will bring in a profit of about 5 million VND/sao, currently the family is taking advantage of taking care of intercropping vegetables, tubers and fruits to supply green vegetables for the upcoming Tet holiday.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan Anh - Chairman of the People's Committee of Thach Son Commune said: Thach Son Commune has a long tradition of specialized vegetable production in Anh Son District. This winter crop, the whole commune has nearly 20 hectares of vegetable growing area, currently people are entering the harvest season of mustard greens and squash, the early season prices are stable, the output is favorable. Currently, the selling price of mustard greens in the field is 3 thousand VND/bunch, squash greens 4 thousand VND/bunch, with this price, each sao of early winter vegetables is bringing an average income of 5 to 6 million VND.

To achieve high results in winter crop production, the Party Committee and the government of Thach Son commune have synchronously implemented many solutions, creating high-quality vegetable growing areas in the area. First, mobilizing people to convert ineffective land areas to commercial vegetable growing. Planning areas, arranging appropriate seed structures, prioritizing the introduction of new crop varieties with high productivity and economic value into production, in order to diversify crops and increase people's income. Propagating to people to apply planting and care processes to ensure food safety, using fertilizers effectively to improve product quality.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thai - Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Anh Son district said: This winter crop, the whole district planted 2,878 hectares, of which winter corn 2,460 hectares, 380 hectares of vegetables, gourds, squash of all kinds; 38 hectares of sweet potatoes. Currently, some early-sown crops have been harvested such as: sticky corn, cucumber in Tuong Son commune; squash in Duc Son commune, mustard greens in Thach Son and Vinh Son communes...

Due to the early harvest, along with the changing of seasons, the supply of vegetables, tubers and fruits is not abundant, so the consumption market is favorable and the prices are good. This is a favorable condition to encourage people to continue expanding the area of winter crops, especially cold-loving vegetables to meet market demand.

To ensure that winter vegetables grow and develop well, Anh Son district has propagated and mobilized people to follow the crop calendar, directed localities, and mobilized people to convert ineffective land areas to grow commercial vegetables. In particular, to encourage people to actively produce winter crops, right from the beginning of the season, Anh Son district People's Committee has had a mechanism to support seeds of 1.3 million VND/ha for corn and vegetable varieties on 2-rice land and support of 10 million VND/ha for potato varieties on alluvial land with product consumption linkage.
