(Baonghean.vn) - At this time, it is the peak season for shallots, but farmers in Anh Son district are reluctant to harvest because the price has plummeted..

This year, Ms. Le Thanh Nguyet's family in Hamlet 323, Dinh Son Commune, planted 60 kg of onion seeds on an area of 2.5 sao (approximately 1500 square meters). With a yield of 1.5 quintals per sao, the selling price last year was 40,000 VND/kg, sometimes reaching 70,000 VND/kg, but now it is only 18-20,000 VND/kg.

According to Ms. Nguyet, on her 2.5 sao (approximately 250 square meters) of land, her family harvested 400 kg of onions last year, earning 20 million VND after deducting expenses, but this year it's less than half that amount.

Ms. Thai Thi Hoa, from village 323, Dinh Son commune, said: "This year, my family invested in planting 80 kg of shallot seedlings on an area of more than 3 sao (approximately 0.3 hectares). Looking at the shallot plants sprouting large, thumb-sized bulbs, everyone was secretly happy for a bountiful harvest. But when it came time to harvest, the price was too low. Currently, my family doesn't want to harvest."

Dinh Son is a locality that has established a specialized shallot cultivation area in Anh Son district with an area of 25 hectares, concentrated mainly in the villages of 19/5, 323 and Thang Tam. In the village of 19/5 alone, nearly 100% of households grow shallots, with the smallest plot being 1 sao (approximately 1000 square meters) and the largest being 5-7 sao.

However, at this time, many farmers are unwilling to harvest their shallot gardens. Some households are waiting for higher prices, while others are harvesting sparingly, so the harvested area has only reached 60% compared to the same time last year.

Not only in Dinh Son commune, but also in many other localities such as Cam Son, Tuong Son, and Phuc Son, shallots are widely grown by farmers. The rapid expansion of cultivation area and the lack of established linkages and markets for the product have led to the current situation of falling shallot prices.
