Nghe An is becoming a locality with great potential for developing brackish water shrimp farming. Instead of traditional methods, many households and businesses are boldly investing in high-tech shrimp farming models to proactively control the environment, limit diseases, and improve productivity, quality, and economic efficiency.

Switch methods

After many years of experience in shrimp farming, Mr. Bui Duy Thuc, residing in Quynh Luong 1 hamlet, Quynh Anh commune, realized that traditional farming methods were increasingly revealing their limitations due to unpredictable weather, increasingly complex shrimp diseases, and continuously rising production costs. That's why, in early 2026, he boldly invested in building a high-tech shrimp farming model on nearly 1.3 hectares, gradually transforming his production methods towards a modern, safe, and sustainable approach.

Before investing in the new model, Mr. Thuc's family had been raising shrimp for six years, with a total pond area of ​​approximately 1.7 hectares. This period allowed him to accumulate a lot of practical experience and realize that to improve economic efficiency, he could no longer rely entirely on natural conditions. Each traditional farming season carried many risks due to weather fluctuations, water quality, and diseases, resulting in unstable productivity and efficiency.

After researching various models, he decided to invest in a high-tech shrimp farming system with enclosed greenhouses. The total investment for the entire project, including the greenhouse system, ponds, equipment, water supply and drainage systems, environmental treatment, and auxiliary items, is approximately 2 billion VND. Currently, the model is entering its first farming season.

According to Mr. Bui Duy Thuc, the biggest difference of high-tech shrimp farming is the ability to proactively control the environment. The greenhouse system helps limit the direct impact of rain, sun, wind, and other adverse external factors, while reducing the risk of pathogens entering the ponds. Environmental parameters are monitored and adjusted regularly, creating favorable conditions for shrimp growth.

"Although high-tech shrimp farming requires a large initial investment, it offers a more stable farming environment, uniform shrimp growth, reduced disease outbreaks, and fewer risks compared to traditional farming. In particular, this model allows for 4-5 farming cycles per year, improving land use efficiency and increasing income for farmers," Mr. Thuc shared.

Not only Mr. Bui Duy Thuc's model, but the wave of investment in high-tech shrimp farming is developing strongly in the province. Data from the Fisheries and Aquaculture Inspection Department shows that from the beginning of 2026 to the present, the entire province has seen the investment and construction of 5 new high-tech shrimp farming models.

Notably, among the new models, there are 3 establishments with a scale of 1 hectare or more: the model of Mr. Bui Duy Thuc, Quynh Luong 1 hamlet, Quynh Anh commune; Mr. Nguyen Vo Hong, Loc Tho block, Vinh Loc ward; and Mr. Thai Ba Nghia, Dong Ganh hamlet, Hai Chau commune. These are all households with many years of experience, boldly investing in greenhouse systems, environmental control equipment, and intensive farming processes to improve productivity and product quality.

According to data from the Fisheries and Aquaculture Inspection Department, there are currently 52 high-tech shrimp farming facilities in the province with a total area of ​​approximately 128 hectares, mainly concentrated in coastal areas such as Quynh Anh, Dien Chau, and An Chau... In addition, there are 70 facilities applying multi-stage shrimp farming models with a total area of ​​approximately 121 hectares. This model helps to better control the farming environment, limit disease outbreaks, improve shrimp survival rates, and increase productivity and product quality.

Leveraging high-tech shrimp farming

With the support of the province's policies and the collaboration of specialized agencies, high-tech shrimp farming models are expected to continue developing in the coming years, contributing to the formation of concentrated farming areas, increasing the added value of Nghe An's shrimp industry, and creating momentum to promote aquaculture development in a modern, safe, and sustainable direction.

According to Mr. Le Van Huong, Deputy Head of the Fisheries and Fisheries Inspection Department, in order to encourage people and businesses to invest in high-tech shrimp farming, the Provincial People's Council has issued Resolution No. 34/2025/NQ-HĐND on a number of policies to support agricultural and rural development in the period 2026 - 2030. Accordingly, high-tech shrimp farming models that fully meet the conditions will receive partial financial support for investment in equipment, biological products, and technical process consulting.

Establishments wishing to access support policies must fully meet the conditions regarding land, area size, technical infrastructure, production processes, and other relevant criteria. After receiving the applications, the Fisheries and Fisheries Inspection Sub-Department will conduct on-site inspections at each model to assess the extent to which the conditions are met. Those establishments that meet the criteria will have their applications finalized and submitted to the Provincial People's Committee for a decision on support under the policy.

Simultaneously, many large-scale businesses and farms have boldly invested in modern management systems such as installing surveillance cameras, using sensors to monitor water quality, automating feeding processes, and updating production data on computer systems. The application of digital technology not only helps farmers closely monitor the production process but also facilitates traceability, farm management, and food safety control.

In the context of climate change, extreme weather events, and increasingly complex aquatic diseases, the development of high-tech shrimp farming is an inevitable trend. Unlike traditional farming methods that depend heavily on natural conditions, high-tech models have better control over temperature, water environment, and diseases, allowing for 5-6 farming cycles per year, achieving yields of 15-20 tons/ha, significantly higher than conventional farming.

According to Resolution No. 34/2025/NQ-HĐND of the Nghe An Provincial People's Council, which stipulates a number of policies to support agricultural and rural development in the period 2026-2030, high-tech shrimp farming models with a scale of 1 hectare or more will receive one-time financial support for purchasing equipment, biological products, and consulting on intensive whiteleg shrimp farming techniques. The maximum support level is 350 million VND per model, with a maximum of 7 models per year.
