From mid-November in the lunar calendar, people in peach-growing areas of the province such as Nam Anh, Nam Xuan (Nam Dan), Kim Thanh, Hung Thanh (Yen Thanh), Nghi An, Nghi Lien (Vinh City), Quynh Vinh, Quynh Loc (Hoang Mai Town), Quynh Tan, Quynh Thang (Quynh Luu)... are busy removing leaves from their peach trees. Locals say that stripping the leaves from peach blossoms is one of the most important steps, and it must be done at the right time so that the peach trees can bud and produce large, beautiful, and evenly sized flowers. Photo: TP

The timing of leaf stripping depends on the peach variety; those sold for branches are stripped later than those sold as whole trees. In the photo: Farmers in Quynh Vinh commune (Hoang Mai town) strip leaves from peach trees sold for branches. Photo: TP

According to forecasts, there will be several periods of intense cold between now and the Lunar New Year, so the process of "re-dressing" the peach blossom trees is being carried out 7-10 days earlier than in previous years. The ornamental peach blossom gardens in Nghi Lien commune (Vinh City) have already had their leaves removed a few days ago. (Photo: Vinh City)

The process of stripping leaves from peach trees is entirely manual, requiring meticulousness and skill, stripping each branch one by one, starting with young, weak branches and then older, stronger ones. Photo: TP

Many households with large peach orchards in Nam Anh commune (Nam Dan district) have to hire laborers to strip the leaves to ensure the work is done on schedule and the peach blossoms bloom in time for Tet (Lunar New Year). Photo: TP

For about the last 10 years, growing peach blossom trees for Tet (Lunar New Year) has become the main occupation in many semi-mountainous areas. The price varies depending on the tree, but the average selling price at the garden ranges from 500,000 to 2 million VND per tree. Some households earn hundreds of millions of VND per year from growing peach blossom trees for Tet. Mr. Phung Van Son, a peach blossom grower in Quynh Vinh commune, said: “I planted nearly 2,000 peach blossom trees for Tet. The trees have been grown for 3 to 4 years, some are about 2-2.5 meters tall, and the expected selling price ranges from 1-2 million VND per tree.” (Photo: TP)

Currently, many traders have visited the orchards to survey prices and prepare for supplying the Tet market. Many large, beautifully shaped peach blossom branches have already been ordered, marked, and paid for in advance by customers. Photo: TP
