Thanh Chuong farmers harvest summer-autumn rice to escape floods

(Baonghean.vn) - To avoid floods and deploy the winter crop promptly and effectively, people in Thanh Chuong district are taking advantage of the summer-autumn rice harvest.

Although it was raining, Ms. Hoang Thi Thuy in Linh Son Village, Thanh Linh Commune (Thanh Chuong) still took the opportunity to go to the field to harvest the summer-autumn rice, because her rice field was deep, the previous afternoon the water was just up to the neck of the rice, but the next morning it was already up to the neck of the rice. Farmers' experience shows that "it is better to be green at home than to be in the field", she had to hurry to harvest, otherwise she might lose everything.

At this time, Ms. Ngo Thi Hue in Hamlet 7, Xuan Tuong Commune is also hiring workers to urgently harvest the rice fields that have been damaged by heavy rain; if not harvested quickly, both the rice and the straw that are submerged in water will be damaged.

Not far from Xuan Tuong commune, Nguyen Si Luc and his wife in hamlet 7, Thanh Luong commune have harvested more than 3 sao of summer-autumn rice and are drying straw to feed their cows. Mr. Luc said that because of the heavy rain, drying rice and straw is very difficult; after threshing, the rice can be "re" and turned inside to wait for the sun, while the straw must be dried immediately to feed the cows and buffaloes.

According to the production plan, this summer-autumn crop, Thanh Chuong district planted about 5,500 hectares of rice. Thanks to favorable weather and good intensive farming, up to now, an estimated 3,000 hectares of early rice in Thanh Linh, Dong Van, Thanh Duong, Thanh Luong, Xuan Tuong, Thanh Lien communes... have been harvested. This is a regular area that is guaranteed to be profitable thanks to early harvest.

According to preliminary calculations, after 3 days of going to the fields, the whole district has harvested about 800 hectares. Mr. Nguyen Hoai Anh - Vice Chairman of Thanh Linh Commune People's Committee shared: "To have early summer-autumn rice, we must sow the seeds when the spring rice has just flowered, and then plant them immediately after harvesting, unlike late tea, which is sown directly and must wait until the harvest is finished before sowing. In the context that summer-autumn rice is always threatened by natural disasters at the end of the season, this is a creative and suitable way of doing things".

Mr. Le Dinh Thanh - Vice Chairman of Thanh Chuong District People's Committee added: "After many years of making it the main crop, this summer-autumn crop in Thanh Chuong is still growing steadily in areas with stable water sources. Thanks to timely planting and good care, this crop continues to be a good harvest. The district is directing people in areas where the rice has ripened to harvest it according to the motto "greener at home than ripe in the fields" to avoid floods and to take advantage of winter crop production. Next year, the district will be more determined in directing to have more early-season rice areas to ensure that floods are avoided."
