Security guards during Tet cost from 800,000 to 2 million VND per day, but security companies are also short of staff. Meanwhile, students have become "in demand".
In Ho Chi Minh City, billboards advertising security guards, housekeepers, and cleaners for Tet are being posted on many streets to meet the rapidly increasing demand of the people.
A survey of some websites of security service companies for Tet 2018 shows that the price of security service for Tet this year is up to 800,000 VND, even 2 million VND/day.

In Ho Chi Minh City, the service of keeping house for homeowners during Tet holiday is becoming "hot" because homeowners are picky about their employees and not everyone wants to spend the whole Tet holiday at someone else's house. On many streets, companies and security centers have posted flyers to recruit more people.
Ms. Dao Hong Hanh (District 9) said that she contacted the security company directly to hire a housekeeper, but the price was too high. It took her a long time to be introduced to a young man who agreed to guard the house during Tet, for 6 million VND for 10 days from the 27th to the 6th of Tet.
Security service companies are also running around looking for people. Ms. Nga, representative of a security company inNguyen Son Street (Tan Phu District) said it is urgently recruiting male and female security guards to work during Tet.
"Usually from 190,000-250,000 VND/12-hour or 16-hour shift. Tet holiday triples, from 540,000-760,000 VND", Ms. Nga said.
Some businesses offer lower prices, however, according to some labor recruitment businesses, prices will have to be negotiated and will continue to increase because many people in Ho Chi Minh City are still worried that thieves will bring a truck to clean their house if no one is home.
According to Ms. Nga, her company normally pays monthly salaries, but now it is difficult to recruit people, so they have to provide free accommodation and advance 30% of the weekly salary.
Due to the shortage of security guards for companies, offices, buildings, banks, shopping centers... the company announced that it only needs men aged from18-60, female, age 18-45, meeting some minimum requirements on height, weight; have ID card to work immediately, additional documents later.
Regarding the regime, security guards are committed to receive 13th month salary, 12 days off/year, 2 times salary on holidays, 3 times salary on Tet, if there are difficulties, the company will advance daily or weekly salary...
Despite offering much more attractive benefits than before, according to Ms. Nga, the company has not recruited enough security guards for the past 3 weeks and needs 10 more people to meet orders.
Opportunity to increase income
According to the survey, many students took advantage of staying during Tet to look after their houses and earn extra income.
Pham Thi Thu Hoai, a second-year student at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, said that because her family's finances are not good, she will not return home this year but will stay and work part-time.
Having been on leave from school since December 22, Hoai applied for a job packaging fermented pork rolls and sausages at a company.
From the 26th onwards, Hoai accepted to clean for some families, the price was up to 700,000 VND/day. Hoai was quite happy because from only 22nd to 30th of Tet, she could earn about 5 million VND to cover her studies after Tet.
Dang Hoang Cong - from Ninh Thuan, a student at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education - said: For the past 2 years, Cong has stayed in Saigon to work extra during Tet.
This year, the same family that Cong looked after the house last year called to invite him to continue working, promising to increase his salary and bonus (last year's salary was 600,000 VND/day, 2 million VND bonus).
"Even though I only worked for a few days, it was enough to pay for the entire semester's tuition. The landlord bought banh chung, banh tet, and food to keep in the refrigerator. Even though I had to be away from my family, I was very happy to help pay for my tuition," Cong shared.
Ms. Luong Thi Thuy Quynh (on Dao Duy Anh Street, Phu Nhuan District) has to hire someone to clean her 4-story house every year. On normal days, the hourly rate is 50,000 VND, but at the end of the year, Ms. Quynh hires the whole package, for 1.5 million VND.
Near Tet is the time when the demand for sofa cleaning increases. Mr. Nguyen Minh Tam (Tan Phu district, has been doing this job for nearly 10 years) said that his orders have doubled or tripled compared to normal days.
"Currently, 6-7 people call me every day to come to their house to clean their sofas, while cleaning one set takes several hours. Now I have to work all day and night. I earn 200,000-300,000 VND for cleaning one set of sofas," said Mr. Tam.
Student"best seller"
Mr. Hoang Le Quang, District 2, said that there was a recent burglary near his house, so even though his house has a surveillance camera, he still had to hire a security guard.
After advertising and searching, he decided to choose a male student from Ho Chi Minh City University of Physical Education and Sports, with a price of 700,000 VND/day 24/7 and an additional 100,000 VND for food each day.
Mr. Quang said the request was very simple, just to guard the house, water the mini garden and feed the fish, but he had to choose and set strict conditions: to use the kitchen, bathroom, sleep in the living room but not to invite others home, not to rummage through things.
Once you find someone, you still have to make an appointment and carefully check their background to make sure they are a student before you can confidently hire them.
Many people like Mr. Quang, although hard to find, still have to check carefully, prioritize students, people from reputable security companies to hire to watch the house.
