“I ordered the United States Armed Forces to begin precision strikes on targets associated with the chemical weapons capabilities of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad,” Trump said from the White House Diplomatic Room on April 13 local time.
The US leader added that the purpose of the campaign was to “establish a strong deterrent against the production, spread and use of chemical weapons.”
Mr Trump also claimed the attacks were coordinated with France and Britain.
“The coordinated response by the United States, the United Kingdom, and France to these crimes will integrate all tools of our national power: military, economic, and diplomatic,” Trump said.
The US president also said the strikes would continue until the Syrian regime stops using chemical weapons. “We are prepared to sustain this response until the Syrian regime stops using prohibited chemical agents,” Trump said.
President Trump has also been adamant that the US will not remain involved in Syria indefinitely under any circumstances. He has previously told his national security team that he wants US troops out of Syria within six months.
“The United States does not seek an indefinite presence in Syria,” Trump said from the White House. “As other nations step up their contributions, we look forward to the day when we can bring our warriors home.” Trump told the nation in his speech that the United States “cannot purge the world of crime or act wherever there is tyranny.” And he described the Middle East as a “troubled place.” “We will try to make it better, but it is a troubled place,” Trump said. “America will be a partner and a friend. But the fate of this region is in the hands of its own people.”
He criticized Russia's support for the Syrian government, declaring that “Russia must decide whether it continues down this dark path.”
Trump also reiterated Russia's 2013 promise that it would guarantee the elimination of Syria's chemical weapons.
