"I ordered the U.S. armed forces to begin precision strikes against targets linked to the chemical weapons capabilities of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad," Trump said from the White House Diplomatic Room on April 13, local time.
The American leader added that the purpose of the campaign was to “establish a strong deterrent against the production, distribution, and use of chemical weapons.”
Mr. Trump also claimed the attacks were coordinated with France and the United Kingdom.
"A coordinated response from the United States, the United Kingdom, and France to these crimes will integrate all the tools of our national power: military, economic, and diplomatic," Trump stated.
The US president also said the attacks would continue until the Syrian government stopped using chemical weapons. “We are prepared to maintain this response until the Syrian government stops using banned chemical agents,” Trump said.
President Trump also insisted that the U.S. would not remain involved in Syria indefinitely under any circumstances. He had previously told his national security team that he wanted U.S. troops to withdraw from Syria within six months.
“The United States is not seeking an indefinite presence in Syria,” Trump declared from the White House. “As other nations increase their contributions, we look forward to the day when we can bring our fighters home.” Trump declared to the nation in his speech that the U.S. “cannot cleanse the world of crime or act wherever there is tyranny.” And he described the Middle East as a “troubled place.” “We will try to make it a better place, but it is a troubled place,” Trump said. “The United States will be a partner and a friend. But the fate of this region rests in the hands of its people.”
He criticized Russia's support for the Syrian regime, stating, "Russia must decide whether they will continue down this dark path."
Trump also reiterated Russia's 2013 promise to ensure the elimination of Syria's chemical weapons.
