Dancer Hoang Yen shared her journey of facing end-stage kidney failure after giving birth, a period of depression and weight loss of 6 kg. Her health has stabilized after a kidney transplant surgery using a kidney donated by her husband.

Meritorious Artist Hoang Yen and her husband, dancer Phan Thai Binh, have stabilized their health and returned to the stage after a challenging journey battling kidney failure. The female artist was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney failure after giving birth to her first child, a major event that profoundly affected both her health and spirit.

The journey from collapse to recovery

Meritorious Artist Hoang Yen (born in 1989) said she discovered several health problems after giving birth, including severe pre-eclampsia symptoms, high blood pressure, and a risk of heart failure. After a hospital examination, she received a diagnosis of stage 4 kidney failure.

“Holding the results in my hand, I couldn’t even cry. I didn’t know what to do, so I finally took some time off from work. I also stopped exercising and lost 6 kg. I didn’t talk to anyone, and I asked myself so many questions. The doctor encouraged me to take the medication and maintain this stage,” she recalled.

Initially, Hoang Yen fell into a state of depression, haunted by the sound of the blood pressure monitor and the constant need to take medication. However, after about 1-2 months, she decided to lift her spirits, reorganize her life, return to work, do light exercise, and adjust her lifestyle according to her doctor's advice.

Throughout her battle with illness, Meritorious Artist Hoang Yen has always had the companionship and support of both her and her husband's families, especially her husband, artist Phan Thai Binh (born in 1990). He was the one who proactively offered to donate a kidney to his wife.

"I didn't want to donate my husband's kidney. Kidney donors also have to live and function like patients, facing kidney failure. However, I couldn't stop his wishes and those of his family," Meritorious Artist Hoang Yen shared.

Artist Phan Thai Binh took time off from work to accompany his wife to Hanoi for treatment. Their kidney transplant journey lasted more than six months with many obstacles, but he was always by her side, offering encouragement. “Thank you for coming into my life and being present in it. Thank you, husband, for always being there, whether I am beautiful and healthy or when I am sick and feeling negative,” she wrote in a message to her husband.

Postpartum health advice

Currently, both artists from the Ho Chi Minh City Symphony Orchestra and Opera House have recovered and stabilized after their surgery. They are now able to return to the stage and resume their performances.

Drawing from her own experience, Meritorious Artist Hoang Yen emphasized the importance of postpartum health check-ups for women. “The dream of a ballet dancer suddenly faded; although she could still dance, it was difficult to guarantee what would happen. This is also a lesson for women to remember to take care of themselves after childbirth. Health is everything,” she shared. The couple advised everyone to pay attention to their health, take time to rest, and change their lifestyle habits to improve their well-being.
