Ms. Vu Thuy Ha, 44 years old, was bending down to push a garbage cart when suddenly Le Nhu Toan approached her, grabbed a sidewalk brick and hit her in the back of the neck.

At 4 p.m. on April 4, Ms. Ha rode her motorbike from her house in Phuc Dien ward, Bac Tu Liem district to Tran Dang Ninh street, Cau Giay district to start her shift as usual. She is one of 28 workers in the Dich Vong collection team working the night shift of Vinh Yen Urban Environment and Services Company.
Ms. Hoang Thi Binh, 55 years old, the head of the Dich Vong night shift garbage collection team, said that after the roll call, Ms. Ha holds a gong and walks along five alleys on Tran Quy Kien Street and one alley on Tran Dang Ninh Street to notify families to take out the garbage. According to the assignment, every day she has to collect garbage and clean these six alleys.

At 9 p.m., it was pouring rain and the wind was blowing hard. Ms. Ha and her colleagues urged each other to push the last garbage trucks to the collection point to be lifted onto the truck. Most of them were middle-aged women, whose main income had been collecting garbage for many years.

Ms. Ha's work lasts from 10 to 14 hours depending on the amount of garbage. Collecting garbage in the alleys ends at 9 p.m., she continues sweeping the streets, picking up litter from 300 to 420 Cau Giay Street. Normally, each shift, she has to push 5 to 7 garbage trucks weighing more than 100 kg from the alley to the collection point about 500 meters away to transfer to a specialized truck.

Ms. Binh said that Ms. Ha is only about 1.5 meters tall and weighs nearly 40 kg, but she is always diligent, working regardless of rain, sun or cold. For each shift, she receives 200,000 VND and at the end of the year, she usually gets a bonus of 1 month's salary.

Recently, she brought her 20-year-old niece along to teach her the job. "Although this is hard work, Ha has never once complained or shown any signs of discouragement," said the team leader.
At noon on April 5, the funeral was held at the Duc Dien ward funeral home. People wearing black shirts and carrying white wreaths lined up to pay their respects to the short-lived female garbage collector.

A relative said she was unmarried and lived alone in a small house next to her parents. A few years ago, her niece (her sister's child) came to live with her because her parents had an accident. She often worked night shifts to take care of her parents who were over 80 years old during the day.

On the same afternoon, the leader of Cau Giay District Police said that Toan was being detained. The suspect had a history of mental illness and showed "abnormal mental state" at the time of the crime.
