Ms. Vu Thuy Ha, 44 years old, was bending down to push a garbage cart when Le Nhu Toan suddenly approached her, grabbed a paving brick, and hit her on the back of the head.

At 4 PM on April 4th, Ms. Ha rode her motorbike from her home in Phuc Dien ward, Bac Tu Liem district, to Tran Dang Ninh street, Cau Giay district, to begin her usual shift. She is one of 28 workers in the Dich Vong garbage collection team working the night shift for the Vinh Yen Urban Environment and Services Company.
According to Ms. Hoang Thi Binh, 55 years old, the head of the night shift garbage collection team in Dich Vong, after the roll call, Ms. Ha takes the bell and walks along five alleys on Tran Quy Kien Street and one alley on Tran Dang Ninh Street to notify families to come out and dispose of their garbage. As assigned, she has to collect garbage and clean these six alleys every day.

At 9 PM, it started raining heavily, with strong winds. Ms. Ha and her colleagues urged each other to push the last remaining garbage carts to the collection point so they could be loaded onto trucks. Most of them are middle-aged women who have earned their main income from garbage collection for many years.

Seeing her being attacked by ToanattackIn front of the Discovery Complex building in Cau Giay district, Ms. Ha collapsed and lost consciousness. A motorbike taxi driver shouted, "She's been murdered! Help!" Working nearby, Ms. Binh learned of the incident and arrived to find Ms. Ha lying in a pool of blood.
Ms. Ha has been working as an environmental sanitation worker for over 10 years, but for many different companies. More than two years ago, she transferred to Vinh Yen Company and was assigned to Ms. Binh's night shift team.

Ms. Ha's work lasts from 10 to 14 hours, depending on the amount of garbage. After collecting garbage in the alleys at 9 PM, she continues sweeping the streets and picking up scattered trash from numbers 300 to 420 Cau Giay Street. Typically, during each shift, she has to push 5 to 7 garbage carts, each weighing over 100 kg, from the alleys to a collection point about 500 meters away to transfer the garbage onto a specialized truck.

Ms. Binh said that Ms. Ha is only about one and a half meters tall and weighs nearly 40 kg, but she is always diligent, going to work regardless of rain, sunshine, or freezing cold. She receives 200,000 VND per shift and usually gets an additional month's salary as a bonus at the end of the year.

Recently, she brought her 20-year-old niece along to teach her the job. "Although it's hard work, Ha has never once complained or shown any signs of discouragement," the team leader said.
At noon on April 5th, the funeral was held at the Duc Dien ward funeral home. A long line of people dressed in black, carrying white wreaths, came to pay their respects to the ill-fated female garbage collector.

According to a relative, she is unmarried and lives alone in a small house next to her parents'. A few years ago, her niece (her sister's daughter) came to live with her because her parents were in an accident. She often works night shifts so that she can take care of her elderly parents, who are over 80 years old, during the day.

Later that same day, the leaders of the Cau Giay District Police announced that Toan was being held in custody. The suspect has a history of mental illness and exhibited "abnormal psychological behavior" at the time of the crime.
