Can coconut water, rock sugar, and ginger cure Covid-19?
Coconut water, rock sugar, and ginger provide minerals and boost the body's immune system, but there is no evidence to suggest they are effective against nCoV, according to experts.
Many people believe that steaming fresh coconut water with ginger and rock sugar helps COVID-19 patients recover. According to Dr. Nguyen Thanh Triet, a pharmacist at the University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City - Branch 3, there are currently no studies or evidence to suggest that each ingredient individually or the combination of these three ingredients has any specific effect on the novel coronavirus.
CoconutIn its natural form, coconut water is a refreshing and nutritious drink. Coconut water contains many cytokinins, a group of plant hormones, including kinetin, trans-zeatin, dihydrozeatin, gibberellins, etc. These substances have anti-aging effects, help prevent cancer-causing factors, and prevent blood clotting.
"Other micronutrients in coconut water such as potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, selenium, copper, zinc, etc., show that it is an effective rehydration drink to replenish electrolytes lost through sweat and maintain other functions," pharmacist Triet shared.
Coconut water also contains sugar, fat, amino acids, organic acids and enzymes, vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, vitamin C... These substances play an important role in catalyzing several biochemical reactions, contributing to maintaining the body's normal physiological functions.
Coconut water can be considered a remedy that helps lower cholesterol, treat kidney stones, stimulate immunity, stimulate reproduction, and rehydrate in cases of diarrhea or sports training. Regularly drinking coconut water is also effective in controlling high blood pressure and preventing the risk of myocardial infarction.
Currently, very few side effects of coconut water have been reported. However, because it is a very potassium-rich drink, people with diabetes, kidney failure, or those taking potassium-sparing medications should avoid drinking too much as it may cause hyperkalemia. Coconut water is very low in sodium, so people with cystic fibrosis (a genetic disease that causes excessive sweating and mucus production) should not use it as a method to increase their sodium levels.
Pharmacist Triet noted that people with low blood pressure or those undergoing surgery at least two weeks prior should avoid drinking coconut water as it can significantly affect blood pressure. Drinking large amounts of coconut water can also cause bloating and stomach discomfort.
The amount of coconut water needed daily depends on age, health condition, activity level, and other accompanying factors. However, based on nutritional value, experts recommend drinking 1-2 cups of coconut water (approximately 240 ml) per day for a healthy adult. Individuals with medical conditions such as low blood pressure, diabetes, kidney failure, or electrolyte imbalances should exercise caution and consult a specialist.
GingerGinger is a spice with an aromatic, spicy, and warming nature. Its characteristic smell and flavor are due to a mixture of pungent resins (mainly zingerone, shogaol, and gingerol) and volatile components in its essential oil (mainly zingiberene, curcumene, zingiberenol, and geraniol), which make up 1-3% of the weight of fresh ginger. Ginger is used as a medicinal herb with many effects such as anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, antibacterial, hypoglycemic, and cancer prevention. In addition, ginger contributes to regulating the immune system.
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, ginger is a valuable medicinal herb with warming effects, treating colds, relieving pain, preventing nausea, stimulating digestion, and treating abdominal pain caused by cold. "Ginger also has some noted side effects; using 6 grams or more of ginger per day can cause mild diarrhea, chest burning, and stomach discomfort. Ginger dust can also cause allergies if inhaled. Additionally, ginger can interact with anticoagulants like warfarin if used in high doses," pharmacist Triet noted.
CandyMade and crystallized from sugarcane, its main component is sucrose. Rock sugar is commonly used in making desserts, preparing dishes, and in some folk remedies for coughs, sore throats, and nutritional purposes. However, its main component is the same as regular refined sugar, which can lead to some health problems such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and dental problems.
According to pharmacist Nguyen Thanh Triet, the above analysis shows that the combination of coconut water, ginger, and rock sugar can be used as a nutritious drink, providing minerals and boosting the immune system in general, similar to other nutritious drinks, in a reasonable manner. Attention should be paid to dosage and cases requiring caution...
"It is essential to adopt a healthy, balanced lifestyle and adhere to disease prevention measures to help boost health and protect oneself against the pandemic," pharmacist Triet advised.
