(Baonghean.vn) - Heavy rain, combined with the discharge of water from hydroelectric plants in the highlands, caused earthworms to crawl ashore in large numbers, and people rushed to the riverbank to catch them to raise poultry.

Days of heavy rain in the highlands of Nghe An, combined with the release of water from hydroelectric plants, caused the water level of the Lam River flowing through Hoa Binh town (Tuong Duong) to rise. Thousands of earthworms lacking air were forced to come ashore, clinging densely to the dike along the river. Taking advantage of this, many people rushed to catch worms to feed chickens and ducks.

At the Hoa Tay river, a group of people followed along the embankment to prevent landslides, picking up worms and putting them into small water bottles. In just a moment, each person had filled the bottle.

Mr. Nguyen Huu Anh laughed as he picked up worms: “Every time the river water rises, we go to this embankment to find worms to feed chickens and ducks. We only need to take a few minutes to have food for chickens and ducks for several days.”

Carrying a bag full of worms home, Mrs. Vi Thi Loan excitedly said: “If we regularly feed this type of earthworm to chickens, they will grow up in no time. My family has dozens of chickens, and we have to feed them rice every day, which is very expensive. Having worms will help us a lot.”

According to many households living along the Lam River, only during flood season do worms crawl up in large numbers, especially on the first day of the flood. The number of worms gradually decreases after that. Therefore, we have to take advantage of the time to mobilize all family members to catch them.
