Thanks to systematic investment and mastery of breeding techniques, the squarehead catfish, also known as giant catfish, owned by Mr. Tran Quang Dao (35 years old) always thrives, yielding a profit of nearly 400 million VND each year.

Before venturing into raising squarehead catfish, Mr. Dao, residing in Hamlet 6, Van Xa Commune, Kim Bang District (Ha Nam Province), had previously cultivated and raised various other fish species, but without achieving high economic returns. After accidentally learning about the highly profitable model of raising squarehead catfish, he visited to observe and learn, ultimately deciding to invest in this type of fish.

To acquire land for his farm, in early 2010, Mr. Dao boldly bid for nearly 10 acres of unproductive rice paddy land in Van Xa commune to invest in improving it for raising tilapia, hoping to develop his family's economy.

Thanks to raising this type of tilapia, Mr. Dao earns nearly 400 million VND every year.

After converting his rice paddies into fish ponds, he started buying fingerlings to try raising them. Thanks to his mastery of farming techniques, the fish were growing incredibly fast. But his joy was short-lived. A historic cold spell caused a massive fish kill, with dozens of tons of fish dying. Difficulties piled upon difficulties; all the money he had invested in fish farming vanished into thin air.

There were times when he considered giving up the idea of getting rich from livestock farming. But his burning desire to prosper in his homeland compelled him to start over, striving to overcome difficulties.

After about 4-5 months of raising, these snakehead fish can reach a weight of 300-700 grams per fish.

"After the fish kill that year, I fell into debt of nearly 1 billion VND. Then I borrowed money from relatives and friends and even mortgaged my land title to get money to revive my business and continue raising fish," Mr. Dao confided.

To date, after nearly 8 years of raising this type of fish, Mr. Dao's farm exports an average of over 80 tons of tilapia to the market each year, selling at prices ranging from 35,000 to 40,000 VND per kilogram. After deducting all expenses, he pockets nearly 400 million VND annually.

Squarehead catfish are large and have delicious meat that is just as good as that of wild catfish.

Speaking further about this type of fish, Mr. Dao said that it is easy to raise, grows quickly, and can be raised at high densities with a short rearing time. On average, it only takes 4-5 months to raise before it can be sold, yielding much higher economic returns compared to other traditional fish species.

According to Mr. Dao, the meat of this perch is just as delicious as that of common perch, so it is popular in the market. Furthermore, this type of fish can be used to cook many delicious dishes that many people enjoy, such as soup, vermicelli, or rice noodles.

Besides selling commercial fish, on average, Mr. Tran Quang Dao also supplies hundreds of thousands of fish fry to the market each year, earning tens of millions of dong and diligently guiding fish farming techniques for people inside and outside the province.

Sharing his farming techniques, Mr. Dao said that this fish species, like the common carp, is very hardy and rarely gets sick. Furthermore, it grows quickly and can be stocked at high densities. During the farming process, attention to water quality and adequate feeding are all that's needed for the fish to thrive and be ready for sale quickly. However, this fish is very sensitive to cold; prolonged temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius can cause mass mortality, so careful planning of the farming time is essential.

Tran Quang Dao's model for raising squarehead catfish is a well-invested and systematic approach.

Through sheer willpower, determination, and a willingness to take risks, Mr. Tran Quang Dao has risen to prosperity on the low-lying, flood-prone land where he was born, contributing to the economic development of his family as well as the development of the aquaculture industry in the locality.
