Raising tilapia according to VietGAP standards is linked to product consumption.
(Baonghean.vn) - In 2016, the Quynh Luu District Agricultural Extension Station organized the construction of a pilot model for integrated tilapia farming according to VietGap standards, linked with product consumption.
Quynh Luu district has nearly 1,200 hectares of freshwater ponds and lakes, which represent a potential for developing freshwater aquaculture for large-scale and concentrated production.
In 2016, with the support of the National Agricultural Extension Center and the Nghe An Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, the Quynh Luu District Agricultural Extension Station organized the construction of a pilot model linking tilapia farming according to VietGAP standards with product consumption at two households: Mr. Le Thanh Dieu and Ms. Ho Thi Hang Nga in Hamlet 9, Quynh Van Commune.

In a 0.5-hectare pond, each household stocked 15,000 new tilapia fingerlings of the Duong Nghiep strain, a F1 hybrid of Philippine origin with a very high male ratio, potentially reaching 100%; stocking density was 3 fish/m2. After 5 months of trial farming, tilapia yield reached 12.4 tons/ha; after deducting expenses, each household earned a profit of over 60 million VND.

On the afternoon of October 18th, in Quynh Van commune, the Quynh Luu Agricultural Extension Station organized a field workshop on the model of tilapia farming in accordance with VietGAP standards, linked with product consumption. According to assessments, compared to the monosex tilapia currently being farmed, the Duong Nghiep tilapia grows relatively faster, 1.4-1.6 times faster. Under the same conditions and time, the GIFT striped tilapia reaches a weight of 300-350g/fish, while the Duong Nghiep variety reaches 500-700g/fish.
Currently, the Đường Nghiệp tilapia is the main farmed species worldwide and is selected as the number one species for clean tilapia farming for export in the northern provinces of Vietnam.
