In Germany, there is fear of a 'gas war' between European countries.

The scarcity of "green fuel" in Europe could trigger a "distribution war" over gas between European countries, according to Die Welt, according to Friedrich Merz, leader of the CDU - Germany's largest opposition party - in an interview with NOZ newspaper.

Gazprom had previously reduced the pumping of fuel through the Nord Stream pipeline because Canada, after repairs, did not return the turbines made by the German company Siemens. As the corporation's representative noted, the equipment for pumping gas into the pipeline was not returned due to Ottawa's anti-Russian sanctions. In addition, from July 11 to July 21, the Nord Stream pipeline will be temporarily shut down for scheduled maintenance.

“There is a possibility of serious conflicts within the EU over (gas) distribution – like in 2015 and 2016, when the refugee crisis occurred,” Merz warned.

According to the politician, it is necessary to draw up a unified gas distribution plan among EU countries.

At the same time, the head of the CDU prevented speculation about the possibility of Russia stopping gas supplies.

“We should not talk about such scenarios in public statements. If Russia behaves in accordance with the contract, deliveries will continue after repairs are completed,” Mr. Merz added.

Cut off gas supplies from Russia

The reduction in gas supplies from Russia this year was due to the suspension of supplies through the Yamal-Europe pipeline in May, a decrease in gas pumped through two other main pipelines - Nord Stream and the Ukrainian gas transit system - as well as disruptions in supplies through the Turkish Stream pipeline due to technical problems.

After Russia began a special operation to protect Donbass from Ukrainian nationalists, the United States and the European Union imposed sanctions on Moscow. Many countries announced the freezing of Russian assets, and calls to abandon Russian energy grew louder. These measures, in turn, dealt a heavy blow to Western countries - causing skyrocketing inflation and sharp increases in food and fuel prices.
