Russian cars priced from… 15 million VND in Vietnam
Russian cars once dominated the Vietnamese market, and now, those legendary models are being offered for sale at prices starting from… 15 million VND.
Like many Soviet goods, cars from Russia were very popular in the Vietnamese market during the subsidy period. Some brands became legendary and a source of pride for Vietnamese people, such as Lada, UAZ, and Gaz Volga.

However, Russian cars have gradually disappeared from Vietnamese streets for a long time now. Instead, we see Japanese, Korean, and German cars from renowned brands such as Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Audi, and Mercedes.
However, Russian cars aren't just a memory for Vietnamese people – those who once loved Russian and Soviet goods. Occasionally, on car forums, you can still find classified ads selling used Russian cars. Notably, these models are advertised with prices starting from just 15 million VND.
In June of this year, a member on the website banxehoi advertised a 1990 Gaz Volga for sale at only 15 million VND. This is a used 4-door, 5-seat sedan, and the seller claimed it was "owned by the original owner, carefully maintained, and guaranteed to have never been involved in any accidents or collisions."
The car was advertised for sale at 15 million VND, but to get it on the road, the new owner had to spend about 19 million VND on various fees and insurance. However, compared to a car, this is a very modest price.
In the Vietnamese market, there is currently no uniform price for used Russian cars. While a 1990 Gaz Volga is advertised for 15 million VND, many models from before 1990 are "valued" at between 50 million and 80 million VND.

Although the Gaz Volga has nearly 80,000 km on the odometer, it's still a usable vehicle as it's a civilian car. Meanwhile, the 1954 Gaz 69, despite only having 10,000 km, is recommended for recreational use only. The asking price is 40 million VND.
The owner of the old Russian car advertised: "For sale: 1954 Gaz 69, imported, in good working condition. This is a military surplus vehicle. It's in good condition, the engine runs very smoothly and powerfully, and it's a pleasure to drive. It's only suitable for collectors, display, or wedding photoshoots."
A more expensive option is the 1992 Lada. The car is claimed to be in good condition, with a reliable engine and all functions working properly. Additionally, it features air conditioning and a nice paint job. Despite still being in good working order, this car is priced at only 30 million VND.

In the used car market, while the Gaz Volga doesn't have a fixed price range, Lada cars have fairly consistent prices. Many people advertise used Ladas for around 30 million VND. The owner of a 1989 Lada is selling their car for 35 million VND.
This 35 million VND Lada is advertised with the following description: "Newly refurbished, many original parts still intact, original 4-speed gearbox, beautiful dashboard, engine is undeniably powerful, you'll only know how great it is to drive it. Guaranteed 100% accident-free, no minor faults, regularly maintained, engine runs extremely smoothly."
On the market, only one 1989 Lada Niva 2112 has been "priced" below 30 million VND. This Lada, described as "convenient for family use, with a smooth engine and good fuel economy," is being offered for 22 million VND, with the price negotiable.
UAZ is also one of the "legends" in Vietnam. With its aristocratic appearance, the Gaz Volga is suitable for city streets. Meanwhile, with its rugged exterior, the UAZ is better suited for mountainous roads. Therefore, nowadays, UAZ vehicles are even more common than Gaz Volga vehicles.
As a result, UAZ vehicles are "valuable." A 7-seater UAZ is being offered for sale at 85 million VND. Despite its age, the vehicle is still guaranteed to have a "smooth-running engine, newly installed air conditioning, super-bright H4 headlights and fog lights, and fuel-efficient operation." It's clear that this UAZ commands a high price because it has been carefully maintained.
