Interview with TV stationCBSIn the program broadcast yesterday, Mr. Obama said that on the East Sea issue, instead of acting according to international laws and regulations, China's attitude is: "We are the biggest kids here. And we will push the Philippines or Vietnam aside."
"But that doesn't mean we're trying to act against China. We just want them to be partners with us. And when they violate international laws and regulations, we will hold them accountable," Mr. Obama said.
The US President emphasized China's role in maintaining global security. "I have maintained the same position since I became president that I believe that a constructive, sincere relationship between the United States and China is critical, not only to our two countries but to world peace and security," Mr. Obama said.
China claims sovereignty over most of the South China Sea, overlapping with the waters of neighboring Southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines and Brunei. The country has recently illegally built artificial islands and built illegal structures such as radar stations, lighthouses and runways on reefs under Vietnam’s sovereignty in the Spratly Islands.
