Onana is about to be "supplied with ammunition" by MU
With consistent form and great potential, Leeds United's Illan Meslier has emerged as a top target, promising to provide much-needed competition for Andre Onana.

Manchester United continue to plan to strengthen their squad, especially in the goalkeeper position, after recent mistakes exposed their weaknesses in goal. The defeat to Tottenham in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals was a serious warning bell. Goalkeeper Altay Bayindir's silly mistakes in this match did not satisfy the coaching staff.
Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayindir has been handed his first start under Ruben Amorim, but a disappointing performance has shown that he is not yet ready to compete for a place in the starting line-up. Meanwhile, first-choice goalkeeper Andre Onana has also made a few errors recently, with Amorim feeling the need to create more competitive pressure to boost his morale and form.
Against this backdrop, Leeds United’s Illan Meslier emerges as a strong option. The French goalkeeper has enjoyed an impressive season in the Championship, keeping 11 clean sheets as Leeds finish second in the table. With 107 top-flight appearances under his belt, Meslier has not only shown consistency but also brought clear tactical value to any team.

United's goalkeeping scout Tony Coton has been keeping a close eye on Meslier and rates him as "the best goalkeeper in the Championship". The Red Devils' interest in the 24-year-old is not new, with both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Erik ten Hag previously eyeing him as a potential target. However, with Meslier's current contract running until 2026, Leeds remain in control.
However, MU can take advantage of the opportunity when Leeds face the risk of losing this goalkeeper for cheap, if he does not agree to extend his contract. According to Transfermarkt, Meslier is valued at around 18 million euros - a reasonable fee for Manchester United. This is also an opportunity for MU to own a young, talented and experienced goalkeeper, at the same time creating healthy competitive pressure on Onana's position.
Signing Illan Meslier is not only a short-term solution but also a long-term strategy for the goalkeeper position at Old Trafford. If this deal is successful, coach Ruben Amorim will have another quality option, helping to strengthen the stability and safety in goal, something MU really needs at this time.
