Mr. Le Minh Tri was elected Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court.
Mr. Le Minh Tri was elected by the National Assembly to the position of Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court, replacing Mr. Nguyen Hoa Binh.
On August 26, at its 8th extraordinary session, the National Assembly proceeded to consolidate several high-ranking leadership positions, including the position of Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court.
The National Assembly conducted the election of the Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court through a secret ballot. Immediately after completing the prescribed steps, based on the vote count results, the National Assembly discussed and voted to approve the resolution electing the Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court for the 2021-2026 term.
Accordingly, Mr. Le Minh Tri, Secretary of the 13th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, was elected by the National Assembly to the position of Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court for the 2021-2026 term with a vote of 438 out of 438 attending delegates in favor.
After that, Mr. Le Minh Tri performed the oath-taking ceremony.
"Under the sacred red flag with a yellow star of the Fatherland, before the National Assembly and the people and voters nationwide, I - Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam - swear: To be absolutely loyal to the Fatherland, to the people, to the Constitution of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and to strive to fulfill well the tasks entrusted to me by the Party, the State, and the people," Mr. Le Minh Tri swore.
National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man, on behalf of the National Assembly, acknowledged the oath of office of Supreme People's Court Chief Justice Le Minh Tri.
According to the Law on the Organization of the People's Courts, the Supreme People's Court is the highest judicial body of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
The Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court is elected, dismissed, or removed from office by the National Assembly upon the recommendation of the President. The term of office of the Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court coincides with the term of the National Assembly.
According to Article 77 of the Law on the Organization of the People's Courts, the Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court is responsible for organizing the judicial work of the Supreme People's Court; and is responsible for organizing the implementation of the principle that judges and jurors conduct trials independently and are only bound by the law.
The Chief Justice also presides over the sessions of the Council of Judges of the Supreme People's Court; has the right to appeal, through supervisory review and retrial procedures, judgments and decisions of the court that have become legally effective as prescribed by law; and submits proposals to the President regarding cases where convicted persons request commutation of the death penalty.
The Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court also has the authority to submit to the National Assembly for approval proposals for the appointment, dismissal, and removal of Supreme People's Court judges; to submit to the President of the Republic proposals for the appointment, dismissal, and removal of Deputy Chief Justices of the Supreme People's Court; and to appoint, dismiss, and remove Supreme People's Court judges...
Mr. Le Minh Tri was born in 1960; his hometown is Cu Chi District, Ho Chi Minh City; his professional qualifications include a Bachelor of Law degree from the Public Security University.
He was a member of the Secretariat of the 13th Party Congress (from August 2024); a member of the Central Committee of the 12th and 13th Party Congresses; and a Member of the National Assembly of the 14th and 15th terms.
Before moving to the central government, Mr. Le Minh Tri had a long association with Ho Chi Minh City, having worked at the Ho Chi Minh City Police Department, holding positions such as Deputy Head of the Security Planning Department, then Deputy Head of Department A12b, and Secretary to the Deputy Minister of Public Security.
Later, he served as Secretary to the City Chairman, Deputy Chief of the Office of the People's Council and People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, and then Chairman of the People's Committee of District 11 and District 1.
He served as Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee from January 2010 to April 2013, then moved to the central government to serve as Deputy Head of the Central Internal Affairs Committee for three years.
In April 2016, Mr. Le Minh Tri was elected Director of the Supreme People's Procuracy and has held this position ever since.
