Macron could negotiate with Russia on behalf of Europe
French President Emmanuel Macron is being urged to negotiate with Russia on behalf of Europe, given its close ties with Moscow.

According to TASS, the British Daily Telegraph quoted a source from the Elysee Palace as saying that French President Emmanuel Macron could become Europe's representative in negotiations with Russian leaders on peace in Ukraine.
The source said the French leader would be willing to take on the role “when the right moment comes”, but the source stressed that it had not yet arrived. The Telegraph notes that President Macron is being pushed to make the move by other members of the “coalition of the willing”, pointing out that he has previously maintained close contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
At the same time, according to the Telegraph, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has no plans to negotiate with Russia.
Earlier, the "coalition of the willing" came to the conclusion that at least one European leader should have a direct dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the Ukraine issue. According to Finnish President Alexander Stubb, "France or Britain should negotiate with Mr. Putin."
According to the press secretary of the Russian President, Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin has not yet received any signals from Europe about its readiness for dialogue and desire to hold talks with the Russian leader.
In March 2025, French President Emmanuel Macron told reporters that he would be ready to resume dialogue with Russian President Putin, when both Europe and Ukraine decide the right time.
