Merkel said the negotiations were "tense and complex." According to her, to separate civilians from terrorists, Moscow and Damascus must end the bombings, which the German Chancellor described as "inhuman."

"We (Merkel and Hollande) have made it clear that Russia has a much greater responsibility that extends far beyond what we have today," she declared.

The German Chancellor also urged Moscow to put pressure on Bashar al-Assad to ensure the safety of Syrian lives.

Hollande took a stronger stance, calling what was happening in Aleppo "a real war crime." Putin reiterated that Russia was ready to extend the ceasefire if the situation in Aleppo allowed it.

He emphasized that the Russian Federation attaches great importance to the need to accelerate the political process of resolving the conflict in Syria and noted that Russia is still awaiting reciprocal steps from the West.
