The Russian leader also emphasized that the award is often given to people who have done nothing for peace. Putin believes that such decisions have seriously damaged the prestige of the award.

President Donald Trump was one of the leading candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize and he repeatedly emphasized that he deserved the award. However, the award was given to Venezuelan opposition politician Maria Corine Machado.
