According to Reuters news agency, Mr. Mueller is the person responsible for investigating how Russia interfered in the 2016 US presidential election, and possible collusion between Mr. Trump's campaign and the Russian government.

Regarding the incident, the Washington Post reported that Mr. Dan Coats, director of national intelligence, Mr. Mike Rogers, director of the National Security Agency (NSA), and Richard Ledgett, former deputy director of the NSA, agreed to participate in questioning with Mr. Mueller's investigators earlier this week.

The Washington Post reported that the investigation into allegations of obstruction of justice against Mr. Trump began shortly after Mr. James Comey was fired on May 9.

On June 14, Mr. Trump's legal team immediately denied the Washington Post's information.

“The FBI leaking information related to the president is terrible, intolerable and illegal,” said Mark Corallo, a spokesman for the legal team.

A spokesman for special counsel Mueller declined to comment on the matter.

Many legal experts say that Mr. Comey's statements during last week's hearing that Mr. Trump expected loyalty and told Mr. Comey that he hoped Mr. Comey would drop the investigation into his former senior adviser could be arguments to strengthen the obstruction of justice charges against Mr. Trump.

During his testimony last week, Mr. Comey did not say whether the president intended to obstruct justice in doing so. However, Mr. Comey added that the responsibility for assessing the issue rests with the prosecutor, Mr. Mueller.

After Mr. Comey's hearing, Mr. Trump declared himself innocent because the former FBI director himself had affirmed three times that Mr. Trump was not the subject of investigation.

Although a sitting US president cannot be criminally prosecuted, obstruction of justice can be grounds for impeachment.

However, such a move would face significant resistance in Congress because it would require the approval of the House of Representatives, which Republicans control with a majority.
