Patriot missiles are ineffective when Il-22PPs are deployed.

As soon as the West increased its E-3 Sentry aircraft presence in Türkiye, Russia immediately deployed the Il-22PP – a type of aircraft that could render the Patriot system useless.

According to Western military sources, in late October 2016, NATO decided to deploy 16 E-3 early warning and control aircraft (AWACS) to Türkiye.

These aircraft only need to fly in international or Turkish airspace to be able to monitor all aircraft activity in Syria. However, this is not easy, as the Russian Air Force has equipment to neutralize NATO's surveillance capabilities.

According to Gazeta.ru, the Russian Air Force has received the first three Ilyushin II-22PP Porubschik aircraft equipped with upgraded jamming devices capable of disabling the electronic systems on enemy aircraft.

These aircraft passed national testing in September 2016.

According to information released by the Russian Air Force, the Il-22PP aircraft is equipped with onboard electronics specifically designed to counter modern AWACS systems, ground-based air defense systems (such as the US MIM-104 Patriot), and manned/unmanned aircraft.

The Il-22PP has a frequency filter, meaning it will not interfere with "friendly" radio electronic systems. The aircraft has a range of up to 6,500 km at an altitude of 8,800 m and a speed of up to 685 km/h.

In addition to its jamming capabilities, the Il-22PP can also independently conduct electronic intelligence operations and protect friendly aircraft from enemy electronic warfare equipment. The Il-22PP will replace the Il-20M electronic reconnaissance aircraft and operate in parallel with Russia's newly developed Tu-214R reconnaissance aircraft.

The Tu-214R's capabilities include electronic intelligence, signal intelligence, and communications intelligence. The aircraft's antennas are capable of intercepting signals from all types of devices, from aircraft and combat vehicles to mobile phones, and it can establish electronic warfare orders (EOB). The Tu-214R underwent national testing this year.

With Russia's deployment of the Il-22PP, even if NATO uses many modern AWACS aircraft, spying on Syria will never be easy for them.
