Breaking up an iPhone smuggling ring worth 20 billion VND via air
The couple colluded with aircraft maintenance staff to transport hundreds of iPhones from abroad via the airport.
On October 8, news from the Ho Chi Minh City Police Department said that an iPhone smuggling ring worth more than 20 billion VND from abroad to Vietnam has been dismantled.
Up to now, the Investigation Police Agency has prosecuted and temporarily detained the couple Nguyen Anh Tuan (33 years old) and Nguyen Thi Thuy Nga (29 years old, both residing in Binh Tan district) for the crime of "Smuggling".
The police also prosecuted Le Van Ngoc (43 years old, residing in Go Vap district) for the same crime.
It is known that Ngoc is a technical staff of the Aircraft Engineering Company Limited (VAECO), under Vietnam Airlines Corporation, in charge of aircraft maintenance at Tan Son Nhat airport.
Tuan transported 12 iPhone 12 Promax from Thailand to Vietnam via Tan Son Nhat airport without declaring it, and was discovered by the Customs Department at Tan Son Nhat International Airport. Upon receiving the investigation, Ho Chi Minh City Police initiated a case and prosecuted Tuan for "Smuggling".
During the investigation, the Investigation Police Agency determined that Tuan and his accomplices smuggled more than 600 iPhone 14 Promax units worth nearly 20 billion VND from Thailand to Vietnam via Tan Son Nhat airport.
In which, Tuan connected with Le Van Ngoc.
Specifically, Ngoc provided the aircraft maintenance schedule that she performed so that Tuan could book a ticket to bring the goods back on a flight that was part of Ngoc's maintenance schedule. When the plane landed, passengers were getting off the plane, Ngoc also moved to the parking lot, boarded the plane to perform maintenance duties.
Ngoc received Tuan's bag at the boarding gate as scheduled and put it in her tool bag. After completing her aircraft maintenance duties, Ngoc traveled through the domestic terminal to leave the airport, avoiding customs control.
Ngoc delivered the goods to Tuan's accomplices in the area outside the airport. Ngoc received 900 thousand VND/phone.
The investigation agency determined that Ngoc received more than 500 million VND to help Tuan and his accomplices smuggle.
In addition, actively assisting Tuan's smuggling activities was the defendant's wife, Nguyen Thi Thuy Nga.
