Slovakia is entering the final testing phase to choose between the CV90120 and the CFL-120 Karpat, two light tank models that are optimal in terms of cost and mobility.

The Slovak Army is facing a decision to modernize its armored forces after ruling out the option of purchasing Leopard 2A8 and K2PL Black Panther main battle tanks due to their high cost. Currently, the country operates 15 Leopard 2A4 tanks and 30 T-72 tanks. A shift towards lighter tanks is seen as a solution that fits the budget and modern combat requirements.

Why Slovakia prioritizes light tanks.

Slovakia's decision wasn't solely based on economic factors. Military experts believe that light armored vehicles possess superior mobility, allowing for the deployment of powerful firepower even in complex terrain inaccessible to heavy tanks. Both finalists, the CV90120 and CFL-120 Karpat, were developed based on the chassis of popular infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs).

CV90120: Advantages of Synchronized Logistics

The CV90120 model utilizes the latest CV90 Mk IV chassis platform from BAE Systems. The biggest advantage of this approach is the similarity in components and maintenance procedures, as Slovakia is also preparing to introduce the CV9035 infantry fighting vehicle into service. Using a shared chassis will significantly simplify logistics and crew training for the military.

CFL-120 Karpat: A combination of Turkish and Italian design.

The CFL-120 Karpat, a competitor to the CFL-120 Karpat, is built on the Kaplan-30 platform from FNSS (Turkey) but with significant modifications. The engine is moved to the rear of the hull, the driver's seat is positioned at the front, and the Hitfact Mk II turret from Leonardo (Italy) is mounted centrally. This is a standard turret with flexible integration capabilities across various vehicle types.

Comparison of technical specifications and firepower.

The weapon systems of both models have many similarities, but there are still differences in barrel length and ammunition loading mechanism:

Notably, the CV90120 has incorporated an automatic loading system from the outset, while the Kaplan-30 version displayed at IDEB 2026 still requires a four-person crew, although plans for an automatic loading system upgrade have been outlined for the future. The Slovak Army is currently awaiting the results of comprehensive field trials before making a final decision on its national defense strategy.
