The M-46 130mm howitzer, one of the most powerful long-barreled artillery pieces manufactured by the Soviet Union, is still in service with more than 35 armies worldwide, including Russia. Notably, recent reports indicate that Hezbollah forces in Lebanon have deployed this type of howitzer from underground bunkers to attack military targets.

Long-range attack capability and extended-range BEE4 projectiles.

The biggest difference in recent combat operations is the use of the BEE4 BB/RA HE rocket-assisted extended-range projectile. This projectile allows the Cold War-era artillery to achieve an impressive range of 44km, far exceeding the 27.5km range when using conventional high-explosive fragmentation rounds.

Although accuracy can significantly decrease when fired at maximum range, the ability to strike from a distance of 44km still provides a major tactical advantage. The origin of these specialized munitions is believed to be from previous legitimate procurement contracts between Syria and China and North Korea, and they are now being used by allied forces in the region.

History of development and operational objectives

The M-46 howitzer was researched and developed to replace the A-19 122mm (model 1931/37) howitzer. The main objective of this system was to destroy heavy tanks, self-propelled artillery, and fortified enemy defenses.
