With a production rate of 40 units per month, the domestically produced 155mm Bohdana self-propelled artillery system currently accounts for 40% of frontline firepower, enabling Ukraine to achieve self-sufficiency and optimize military logistics.

The 2S22 Bohdana self-propelled artillery system, a limited-scale domestic project, is gradually establishing itself as a key component in the operational arsenal of the Ukrainian armed forces. In the context of high-intensity combat, this artillery system not only meets firepower requirements but also helps Kyiv solve the complex problem of maintenance and technical synchronization when operating various types of equipment supplied from the West.

Strategic position and the role of simplifying logistics.

Ukraine's simultaneous operation of various types of artillery from different countries has posed a significant logistical challenge. In light of this, the Bohdana system has emerged as a strategic solution to simplify the firepower structure. According to the Ukrainian Army Artillery and Missile Command, this system is being prioritized for development to become the main artillery platform in the near future.

Colonel Andrii Zhuravlov, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Command, confirmed that as of October this year, Bohdana complexes (including both self-propelled and towed versions) have accounted for approximately...40% of the total number of artillery pieces. These are being deployed on the front lines. This number demonstrates the widespread availability and ability to meet continuous operational needs when external supplies of military equipment may be limited.

NATO standard specifications and operational capabilities

The 2S22 Bohdana is Ukraine's first NATO-standard 155mm wheeled self-propelled artillery system. Its design focuses on practicality, combining long-range firepower and high mobility.

  • Range:It has a range of approximately 40km with conventional high-explosive rounds and up to 60km with missile support rounds.
  • Rate of fire:An average of 6 rounds per minute allows for concentrated firepower deployment and rapid withdrawal to avoid counter-fire.
  • Durability:The estimated lifespan of a gun barrel is 8,000 shots, a crucial indicator in prolonged artillery engagements.
  • Chassis:Using the KrAZ-6322 (6x6) off-road truck, weighing 25 tons, allows for more flexible movement across various terrains compared to tracked systems.

Besides its mechanical advantages, the Bohdana also possesses a modern fire control system. Its full compatibility with standard NATO 155mm ammunition allows the Ukrainian army to effectively utilize international aid. Field experience shows that the Bohdana maintains a technical readiness rate of 80%, significantly higher than many other complex imported artillery systems.

Technological improvements and expansion of production scale.

The Kramatorsk manufacturer is constantly updating its technology based on real-world feedback. Components such as the digital fire control system, automatic aiming mechanism, and reloading assist device are being tested to reduce the workload for the five-person crew and increase the rate of fire.

In the medium term, Ukraine aims to make the Bohdana its sole standard artillery system. Part of this plan involves integrating the 155mm cannon onto modern truck chassis from South Korea and Germany. Using imported chassis not only increases durability but also ensures compatibility with NATO's component supply and maintenance chains, reducing pressure on domestic industrial infrastructure.

Additionally, a shorter 39mm gun barrel variant is also being studied to meet specific tactical needs in areas with limited terrain. The flexibility of the modular design allows commanders more optimal combat options.

Ukraine's production capacity has made a significant leap. By the beginning of September, the country had shipped approximately 345 Bohdana rifles. At the current rate, this figure reaches...40 people per monthThe total number may have exceeded 480. Maintaining a high production rate under conditions of frequent attacks on infrastructure demonstrates the strong adaptability of Ukraine's defense industry.
