The Israel Defense Forces deployed the new generation Roem self-propelled howitzer for the first time in the offensive against Hezbollah, marking a significant step in modernizing its ground firepower.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have officially deployed the Roem self-propelled howitzer, also known as SIGMA 155, for the first time in combat operations targeting Hezbollah. Units of the 282nd Artillery Brigade deployed the system in the border region to support ground operations, destroying numerous enemy missile launch sites and anti-tank positions.

Superior technical specifications and combat capabilities.

Roem is a fully automated self-propelled artillery system developed by Elbit Systems, using a 10x10 off-road truck chassis. The system is designed to achieve a range of up to 40 km and maintain a continuous firing rate of multiple rounds per minute. The high mobility of the wheeled chassis allows the system to quickly change position immediately after firing, minimizing the risk of counter-fire from the enemy.

During the campaign in southern Lebanon, Roem played a key role in providing long-range fire support for mobile units. The combination of rapid response capabilities and powerful firepower allowed the Israeli military to effectively handle unexpected threats without requiring significant warning time.

Replacing the older generation M109 Paladin artillery system.

The deployment of the Roem is part of the IDF's long-term plan to replace the decades-old American-made M109 Paladin tracked self-propelled artillery systems. Compared to the M109, the Roem possesses a clear advantage in range, reaction time, and mobility on paved roads thanks to its wheeled design.

In particular, the high level of automation on the SIGMA 155 simplifies the operational process, reduces the burden on the combat crew, and shortens the time from target identification to firing. This is a crucial factor when confronting the enemy's agile missile launch teams.

Israel's Artillery Modernization Roadmap

According to the IDF's plan, the first unit fully equipped with the Roem self-propelled howitzer will be fully deployed within the next three years. The replacement process across the entire army is expected to take place by the end of this decade. With a design lifespan of up to 50 years, the Roem system is capable of flexible upgrades to meet future operational requirements.

The results of combat operations in southern Lebanon provided valuable data for Israel to refine its deployment methods. The successful transition from testing to combat demonstrates that the Roem is ready to become a new cornerstone of Israel's ground firepower.
