France 1-0 Paraguay: Mbappe qualifies for the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals.
Kylian Mbappe equaled Lionel Messi's record with a decisive penalty goal, helping France overcome Paraguay to advance to the quarterfinals of the World Cup.
The French national team officially secured their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup after a narrow 1-0 victory over Paraguay. In a match where the "Les Bleus" attack struggled against the disciplined play of the South American team, Kylian Mbappe's composure and the solidity of the defense proved to be the key factors in deciding the game.
The defense: Didier Deschamps' steel shield.
Despite Paraguay's attempts to push forward at times, the French defense had an almost perfect day. Dayot Upamecano and William Saliba continued to demonstrate excellent chemistry, turning the penalty area into an impenetrable fortress.

Upamecano (7.8 points) was the highest-rated defender thanks to his judgment and strength in one-on-one challenges. Behind him, goalkeeper Mike Maignan (7.7 points), although not having to do too much work, always maintained maximum concentration to neutralize dangerous crosses from the opposition.

Midfield and the creative challenge
Adrien Rabiot (7.4 points) remained the heartbeat of the midfield with his ability to control and dictate the game. However, the biggest surprise was Manu Kone (6.9 points). Despite receiving a yellow card after a fierce foul, the midfielder almost created a wonder goal if his dangerous long-range shot hadn't been brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Orlando Gill.

Mbappe shines amidst concerns about the attacking line.
In contrast to the solid defense, the players surrounding Kylian Mbappe had an underwhelming performance. Michael Olise (6.8 points) and Bradley Barcola (6.3 points) both struggled to break through Paraguay's defense. Barcola, in particular, was lackluster and was substituted just after the 60th minute.

In a deadlock situation, Kylian Mbappe (7.7 points) once again proved why he is the team's leader. Despite playing relatively quietly for most of the match, Mbappe made no mistake from the penalty spot to score the only goal of the game. This goal not only secured a place in the quarter-finals but also helped him equal Lionel Messi's record of 7 goals in the Golden Boot race.

The victory against Paraguay demonstrated the mettle of a championship contender. Although their attacking play wasn't perfectly fluid, their ability to capitalize on opportunities and the solidity of their defense are making the French team an extremely difficult opponent to beat at this year's World Cup.
