(Baonghean.vn) – On December 6th, France held the first round of regional elections. According to preliminary results, the far-right National Front (FN) party won the overall victory. This is also the first victory for a far-right party in France.

According to preliminary estimates on the evening of December 6th, Marine Le Pen's FN party won with 30.6% of the vote, far ahead of the Republican Party (27%) and the Socialist Party (22.7%). With this victory, the FN party has for the first time taken control of 6 out of 13 major metropolitan areas in France.

Marine Le Pen celebrated her election victory with a speech:

“The people have spoken, and for them, France needs to demonstrate leadership. The voting results once again confirm what previous polls had predicted: there is no doubt that the nationalist movement is the leading party in France.”

This coming Sunday, December 13th, France will hold the second round of regional elections. Analysts predict that Le Pen's far-right party will still win the overall election.

The results of the French regional elections did not surprise analysts. Since 2010, the far-right FN party, with its strong anti-terrorism policies, has begun to gain more popular support, especially after the two terrorist attacks targeting the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo in January 2015 and the series of attacks in Paris on November 13th of this year.
