New toad species discovered in Nghe An.

A new species of broad-toed toad has been discovered in the biosphere reserve of Nghe An province.

According to Dr. Nguyen Thien Tao, a member of the research team, the new species has the scientific name Megophrys latidactyla. The specimen was collected at Pu Mat National Park, Nghe An province.

The new toad species has distinctive features such as a flat head that is wider than it is long, large, protruding eyes with horns on the upper eyelids, and a distinct skin border on the upper edges of its fingers and toes.

This is the second species of toad with the distinctive eyes recorded in central Vietnam.

The new species is the result of collaborative research between the Vietnam National Museum of Nature and the Saint Petersburg Zoological Institute (Russia).
