By analyzing data from the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft, launched into orbit in 2008 to explore the Moon, scientists have for the first time obtained irrefutable evidence of the existence of water.
Ice fragments are found in craters at the poles of Earth's largest natural satellite, where the sun cannot reach. Scientists also say that these forms of water may have been there for as long as 3 billion years.
Confirmation of the presence of water on the Moon (not just underground) is good news for anyone who has ever worried about the possibility of humans returning to the Moon for a mission.
Speaking to The New Daily, Jim Bridenstine, a NASA employee, said that exploring the Moon will soon become "feasible." This is because the ice on the Moon would be a valuable resource, potentially not only for providing water but also for producing rocket fuel and oxygen for breathing.
Many people also hope that after finding water on the Moon, this satellite will be used as a transit area for humans to continue their work exploring Mars and outer space.
However, many argue that it's premature to be optimistic because scientists haven't yet determined the exact amount of water that exists as ice on the Moon, nor the means to extract it.
